A 29-year-old surfer is lucky to be alive today after being bitten by a Great White Shark around 2pm yesterday while surfing The Sewer at D’Estrees Bay on Kangaroo Island, South Australia.
The local surfer managed to paddle back to shore where a bystander helped him, driving him towards Kingscote, the largest town on Kangaroo Island, before being met en route by paramedics who transported him to hospital. The surfer was then airlifted to Adelaide for treatment.
The surfer was reportedly bitten on the back and torso, but his injuries are believed to be non life threatening.

Michael Pengilly, mayor of Kangaroo Island told the ABC that the incident didn’t surprise him.
“There’s a lot of surf spots right around the island and of course we’ve got heavy concentrations of sea lions and a lot of sharks live in the waters around, particularly the south coast of Kangaroo Island,” he said.
“It’s not surprising, you’re going into their territory so you have to expect anything, quite frankly.”
“It’s a very rugged piece of coast and it’s well known that there’s sharks down around and work in that area.”

Police are asking members of the public to avoid the area.
This is the first shark attack on Kangaroo Island since 2005.
Australia-wide, there have been four fatal shark attacks on surfers since June 2020, thankfully this wasn’t one of them.
