After the dry comes the flood, and after a flat spell comes a massive swell - Australia sure is a land of extremes and it comes sharply into focus when you think of recent weather phenomena on the East Coast.

This April was the wettest in Sydney since the 1950's, while May was the driest in many years. Then, kaboom! All hell broke loose last night as a cyclonic-style East Coast Low whipped up gale force winds and massive seas off the NSW coast, of a calibre not seen since June 8, 2007 when a similar ECL grounded the 76,000 tonne bulk ore carrier Pasha Bulker off Nobbys Beach near Newcastle.

The bad news for surfers is that the howling southerly winds severely limited options to novelty breaks inside Port Hacking, Botany Bay, Sydney Harbour and Broken Bay this morning.

A few die hard big wave surfers tackled storm surf off Cronulla Point, Lurline Bay near Maroubra, The Southie off Coogee, Deadmans at Fairy Bower and Makaha off Collaroy, but generally it was just storm surf eroding beaches and surging through on this morning's big high tide.

There should be more surfable options as the tide drops out this arvo and definetely over the coming days as the wind mellows and the swell slowly settles and cleans up.

These photos, taken this morning, beg the question: how big is it out there? If you've been out for a paddle, or even just sawched a few monster sets roll through from the carpark, let us know your verdict in the comments below.

Look out for further updates later today and let us know where you surfed or if you found a rare spot breaking.
