SE QLD SWELL REPORT: Bumping Burleigh

The effect of the latest East Coast low on the Gold Coast.

Report by John Charlton

Late last week an East Coast low pressure system spun up off the Northern NSW coast. A big high pressure system was covering the country and squeezing up against it on its western flank. This caused really strong Southerly winds that were up in the 30 knot range and a big Southerly swell, but unfortunately most of that swell was not getting in onto the coast and what did had a decent bump on it.

Conditions started to ease on Tuesday as the Low Pressure system tracked off towards the top end of New Zealand, the swell turned to the South East and the winds dropped off some. The only problem was trying to find a spot to surf as the swell was too straight for the beachies and all the sand has been scoured off the top of all the Gold Coast points by previous winter swells. From Snapper Rocks to Greenmount Point is a big hole at the moment and it was down on the inside banks of Currumbin Alley and the Rock Break at Burleigh on high tide that were the pick spots. They have been very crowded as the number of surfable point break options has been cut right back with Snapper and Rainbow Bay out of action at the moment. Still, if you managed to jag a few it has been fun.
