WA SWELL REPORT: Winter Returns

The start of August 2012 has seen a return of typical Winter weather patterns after recording it's driest July since Bureau of Meteorology comparable records commenced in 1900. While last month saw day after day of clean offshore conditions this month we have seen plenty of cold rainy onshore days and some large stormy swells. It wasn't all doom and gloom though as in between cold fronts there were still a few quality stand out days in the south and plenty more for the lucky few who made a timely Winter northwest escape over the past fortnight.

The end of July finished in style in the south with a clean 6ft+ WSW swell delivering the goods on Saturday the 28th slowling easing through Sunday under clean and offshore winds. Onshore conditions set in for much of the next fortight with just a few fun surfable days at protected bays and points though the period. The next offshore day arrived on Thursday the 9th of August when winds shifed to a light ENE'ly direction with solid and raw, unsettled swell in the 6-8ft range in the southwest. Conditions improved on Friday with clean offshore winds and a swell in the 4-6ft range. Saturday saw the end of the good run with glassy 4-6ft waves the norm through the morning with very inconsistant bigger sets at exposed reefs and bombies. Wind shifted NW'ly by in the evening and rain begun to fall accross the south of the state.
