THIS WEEK IN SURFING and... THE RADICAL CHIPPA WILSON
It's Friday and soon, or even right now, you'll be eating fish and chips, or not. Either way, it's time to tune out and catch up on surfing and the internet this week.
First up: One week ago the new Analog/Riley Blakeway film, Chromatic, premiered in Manly on Friday night. Chippa Wilson is a star and he was there. Benny Godwin does a giant double grab air into the flats in the film and he was there also. The film aslo stars Nathan Fletcher but he wasn't there. Neither was the filmmaker Riley Blakeway. They were missed. The 20-minutes of film grain and freakshow surfing will be available online for free in a few weeks. Look forward to it.
Speaking of Chippa Wilson, he is currently leading the charge for Kustom Airstrike's 50k. That 50k doesn't stand for 50 kayaks either, that'd be weird and completely nonsensical, no it stands for 50 thousand dollars! Chippa is currently leading on the public voting system for his full rotation stale-fish air reverse (screen-grabbed below). Also in the running are John Florence, Ryan Callinan, Matt Meola and Albee Layer. You can go here, check out the clips and give it a vote yourself right now!
Speaking of Chippa Wilson again. He is in the Middle East at a wavepool, doing airs with friend Jack Freestone, photographer Matt O'Brien and filmmaker Shane Fletcher. How good is it going to be when that footage comes out? Keep your eyeholes open for that.
Speaking of wavepools in the middle east. Remember when Dion Agius went to that wave-pool above? And made that amazing clip? Well these are the offcuts from said clip. How great is that? So great. How great is his launching into the air and his throwing of fins? The greatest.
Speaking of fins. Kelly Slater and FCS have parted ways. In a press release sent out today FCS have said: "The split was amicable, and was driven by Kelly’s desire to explore new opportunities with his accessory brand Kommunity. Kommunity currently manufactures and sells traction pads, leashes, and board covers; categories which have been occupied by FCS for many years." Does this mean the death of the K-fin? No. Well, not just yet... The Press Release continues: "While Kelly is no longer official sponsored by FCS to ride the system and fins, he has indicated that he will continue to ride the system indefinitely. FCS also has a range of Kelly Slater signature fins that will still be available until August 2013."
Speaking of Kelly Slater, anyone picking him to win at Trestles? He won last year and is no doubt smarting at his early exit at Chopes two weeks back. Julian Wilson and Alejo Muniz are looking pretty good there, oooh so is Carissa in this neat little edit. Trestles is arguably the best high performance wave in the world, and watching a video like this is getting Coastalwatch salivating for the next event in just over a week's time.
Speaking of high performance rights. Remember when J-Bay was on the tour? Naww, those were the days. Just a year ago wasn't it? And we were all a year younger... Watch this and feel gooey for the amazing place.
Speaking of high performance rights once more… Matt Wilkinson goes right in the Mentawais. Is Matt Wilkinson's backhand better than his forehand? Look out Trestles, Wilko's backside is going to explode all over your face... umm... that sounded weird.
Speaking of weird. Coastalwatch's favourite non-surf-clip-of-the-week-that-is-somehow-connected-to-the-surf-industry this week goes to: this mini-doco on the timeless Jamaican art of Daggering created by the good people at Insight.
Please watch with discretion and have a good weekend.
