THIS WEEK IN SURFING and... French Beach Breaks Are The Best Beach Breaks

5 Oct 2012 0 Share

Oui oui, it's true. It is indeed Friday. Welcome to the best things that happened in surfing on the internets and interwebs in the past week. Viva La Graviere!

"Holy Moly Batman!" delicately exclaimed Margaret river poet, Jake Paterson, when Dane Reynolds got spat out of a ten. "Holy Moly Batman!" could be said about the whole Quiksilver Pro France, 'cause hasn't it just been the most entertaining event of the year?

Pumping, unpredictable and dangerous beachbreak barrels with the world's best taking to them with skill and competitive passion has made this week of internet surfing oh so totally awesome. In round two Yadin Nicol got a ten while his opponent Jeremy Flores had a two wave hold down in the shallows. Jeremy still won. Talk about drama! And that's just scratching the surface of the awesomeness.

The event should finish tonight... till then, click through the gallery and check out the highlights below (all photos by Cestari and Kirstin courtesy of ASP).

On top of that, how is tonight's draw? Pumped? Ryan Callinan is!

With every comp that passes in 2012, including this one, the World Title Race gets a little bit better, here are 5 reasons why this World Title Race is shaping up to be the most entertaining in years:

1. Mick v Parko

Make no mistake, there is no greater rivalry in surfing at the moment than between these two Coolanagatta mates. Currently World Number 1 and 2 (though that could change after tonight), Mick has two World Titles and two event wins this year over Joel, but Joel has been surfing with a freedom and confidence in the last few events that we haven't seen from him since his run of World Title ending injuries a few years ago. Watching these two athletes go head to head in good waves is like watching Kobe and Lebron at the Staples Centre or Federer and Nadal at Wimbledon. Sublime!

2. Kelly Slater

Kelly just won his 50th WCT event at the Hurley Pro Trestles, is 40, and is propped comfortably in the top three to have a striike at his 12th World Title. It's rumoured he'll finally retire at the end of this year and could possibly take over as head of the ASP. Betya he's thinking 12 is a much nicer number to hang his rashie on than 11.

3. The Newcomer

John Alexander Florence is the most sensational young surfer to come on tour since Kelly. John turns 20 on November 18th this year, Kelly won his first World Title at 20 years old. If John John takes the crown he will also take away Kelly's record as being the youngest ever World Champion (if you don't include Carissa Moore). That's probably the only Kelly Slater record we might see fall in our lifetimes.

4. The Pipe Masters

With Mick falling early in France (and Trestles) and John John, Kelly and Parko all making the semis or higher, the race is tight. So tight that with just two events before the Pipe Masters (Portugal and Santa Cruz) it seems unlikely there will be a World Champ decided before the surfing world arrives on the island of Oahu. Parko has three Triple Crowns, John John won his first last year and grew up with the famous wave as his playground, while Kelly has a house next door to John and can surf Pipe in his sleep. Mick, well Mick won Chopes this year in big barrels and is no stranger to getting a World Championship trophy during the Pipe Masters... December is going to be one hell of a month for surfing sports fans.

5. The Passing of The Baton

It is alleged that Kelly once said that it'd be an honour to surf a final with John John, he is going to be that great. Imagine a heat at Pipe between Kelly and John John that had the World Title depending on it? I'd pass out.

After France... roll on roll on, this show, The Rip Curl Pro Peniche, Portugal starts mid-next week... Awesome! And Coastalwatch will be on the ground bringing you The Sardine – Pictorial Notes and The Other from the Rip Curl Pro Portugal – A collaboration with Surfing World Magazine. Such fun!

Vans
released the sequel to their awesome movie, Get-n Classic. This one is called Get-N Classic Volume 2. It is awesome... too. How could it not be with the all star cast that make up the Vans team?

Speaking of all-star casts of rad dudes, here's the trailer for Arnette's movie Multiple Personality Disorder...

Coastalwatch
(that's us) brought you this Shippies video from Mikey Brennan. Stellar and awe inspiring and nail biting and fear inducing and just plain ridiculous stuff from the boys down south as always.

Do you want to see Alana Blanchard and her really really pretty friend hang out in Fiji on a bikini shoot? You don't? Ok, well we'll leave the video just here in case you change your mind...

Another clip in the folio of consistently very very good videos from Alex Gray this year. Teahupoo.

And our favourite clip this week is a short film starring Ryan Callinan by Jay Grant. Ryan is currently in Bali for the World Junior Titles. He currently has the cover of Surfing World, and he is currently a super legend of Australian junior surfing. Click play and join him on his journey of a pretty shitty 12 months. CW out!
