THIS WEEK IN SURFING and... World Title Maths

9 Nov 2012 0 Share

It's Friday night! And it's the weekend! And Taj won his second event of the year! And Obama won an election! And the World Title race is between Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater! And it's the year 2008 2012!

Ahhhh, internet, what ya got for us this week? So many good things.

First up let's talk about the O'Neill Coldwater Classic at Santa Cruz. It was an event of upsets and surprises that ended with a Taj Burrow/Matt Wilksinson final that Taj took out. Nice. Hooray for that. The other big winner was the event's setting – the cliffs and the culture and the history of Steamer Lane has got to be one of the best on the tour now doesn't it? And whoever was behind the video packages at the end of each day was doing a hell of a job. Check these two edits. As good as they come...

Most importantly, the O'Neill Cold Water Classic left a World Title unresolved and closer than ever coming into the Pipe Masters. Here's where it's at...

The World Title Race Breakdown:

it's a three horse race with Kelly SlaterMick Fanning, and Joel Parkinson casting their eyes on the trophy. Here's the maths...

If Parkinson finishes 13th, 9th or 5th at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 5th or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.*
*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.

If Parkinson finishes Equal 3rd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 3rd or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.*
*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.

If Parkinson finishes 2nd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning cannot win the 2012 ASP World Title.

Basically

Whoever finishes higher out of Parko and Kelly at Pipe will be the 2012 World Champ (unless Mick wins the comp and Kelly and Parko both flunk out early).

Speaking of Hawaii... this is brilliant. Brian Bielmann gave a TED Talk in Honolulu. The term legendary photographer gets bandied about a lot in surfing circles but in Brian's case that label is pretty dang legit. Play this. Enjoy. Get Inspired.

Do you like bodysurfing? Sure you do. It's awesome. And so is this clip artfully paying homage to the graceful art of the torpedo people.

Noa Deane was in Japan and he went surfing. Radical.

The East Coast of America continues to reel in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the biggest Atlantic Hurricane on record. This video showing some of the devastation thrown upon iconic New York surf beach, Rockaway, is eye opening to say the least.

It's a bizarre feeling to watch a video like that, and then a video like the one below where the same hurricane that brought so much destruction to so many people, also brought waves to Florida that some are calling the best they've ever seen on that coast. Evan Geiselman finds some light amongst the darkness that this natural disaster has caused.

Are you wondering why you haven't seen that much footage of Jordy Smith surfing as good as he used to? Well, it's 'cause the best surfing he's ever done (seriously) is in his new movie, Bending Colours. Kai Neville directed it and Red Bull threw down the paper to make it as amazing as they could, so expect greatness. The Australian premiere is Tuesday and Kai and Jordy will be in attendance and if you want, so will you. Head here for more info and tickets.

And to end the week and start your weekend with, Coastalwatch just found your third most favourite website (except probably not...) It's a fan tumblr for Laird Hamilton and Kelly Slater and itt's called ilovekellyandlaird.tumblr.com It is pretty amazing... if you're into that kind of thing. Here is a sample:

So weird. So fun. So weird. Have a good weekend. CW out.
