THIS WEEK IN SURFING and... Aloha Hawaii

16 Nov 2012 0

Welcome to Friday! Isn't it exciting? Exciting that it's Friday? Yep... Anyway, what happened on the internets and surfings this week? Let your old pals at CW show you.

Kelly Slater in Black and White... once more! This time it's an interesting and candid short flim by Steve Sherman who films Kelly Slater from within his inner sanctum for a full day. The day is September 18 of this year, which was during the Hurley Pro at Trestles. An event the great man won.

Speaking of iconic legends on digital video tape, Tom Curren released a music clip.

Did you know?
If you type "Kelly Slater Tom Curren" into youtube, this comes up: A video of a replay of Tom Curren on the video game Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer while Carry on Wayward Son by Kansas plays in the background. Ladies and Gentleman, without further adieu, I give you the worst surfing video on the internet.

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing has started (and Dane Reynolds has a wildcard!) with the first day of surfing at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, Haleiwa underway right now (depending on when you read this) you can watch it here. The highlight of the competition season in Hawaii so far though is definitely Sunny Garcia's win in the ASP 4 Star event the HIC Pro at Sunset. Dude's a grandfather. Pretty impressive. Matt Hoy was stoked by the resut, as illustrated by this shot he put on his Instagram...

Oh yeah. This happened in Hawaii too. Gabriel Medina continues to blow minds...

While we're still talking about and looking to Hawaii, let's watch everyone's favourite surfer (he's your favourite surfer too... even if he isn't, he is) Mason Ho.

As we count down the days to Pipe, and the World Title showdown, we can already start thinking about next year with the release of the 2013 schedule. Gone is Santa Cruz, the lovely World Tour one hit wonder, and still missed is J-Bay (which, particularly after how awesome it was as a 6 Star this year, is a real shame). But in good news, Margaret River will be a World Tour event in 2014. Hooray West Oz.

The Schedule...

Sally Fitzgibbons
wandered the desert in search of wavepools and aerials. She found both. Love you Sally.

Would you like to watch one of Australia's greatest athletes, surfing at peak condition, shot on Phantom and Red, to a soundtrack of Radiohead? Yes. Mick in Monochrome by Shorty. Too good.

Super-legend-awesome-guy Jay Bottle Thompson shaped himself a surfboard, and then ripped the crap out of some Bali waves on it. Radness! To see more of this kinda gold head to bottle-surf.com

After this for NZ surf film Under The Weather, Dear Suburbia earlier in the year and umm... Endless Summer 1, NZ should be up there on your surf-trips-to-do list.

Remember those love-able fellas from Surfing 50 States. They're back, and surfing in India. What fun! More info on their upcoming tv series here.

Derek Hynd
and Ryan Burch and Taylor Miller get all desert and finless and Aus Chamber Orchestra up in this clip...

And to end This Week in Surfing for yet another week... our favourite clip from the last seven days brings it back to Hawaii once again with a good look at its crown prince, John Alexander Florence. What a freak of nature this guy is, and how amazing is he going to be? Back to back Triple Crowns anyone?

Enjoy your weekend. Relax. Smile. Get barrelled and feel good. CW out.
