Ten Things Surfing Gave The Internet This Week
Presented by Kittens Inspired by Kittens

No major World Tour events happened this week, but still so many things did, like clips with surfing in them and clips without surfing in them. Here are the ten best as judged by us!

Introducing the, umm, face of the Roxy Pro Biarritz 2013.

Introducing the, umm, face of the Roxy Pro Biarritz 2013.

1. That Roxy Pro Trailer
In which the five time World Champ promotes a surfing event, without surfing….

If we're talking internet and surfing this past week, then there is no bigger story than the release of the Roxy Pro Biarritz trailer. The sultry clip depicts a faceless woman (Steph Gilmore) waking up in a luxury French apartment – white sheets, coffee, pastries. Her shirt gently falls slowly to her feet as she enters the shower. In slow-motion she heads to the surf in a brand new Jeep before she steps barefoot onto European cobblestones, puts on a heat jersey and paddles out at a French beach. We never see her face but we do see her bum in a skimpy bikini bottom as she paddles to the horizon… And then… "Coming soon. Roxy Pro…". The clip is beautifully shot, and really no great difference to your average fashion editorial you might see in GQ, a bikini ad, or even a Stab Magazine Hotter Than Fish Grease feature. But then, this is none of those things, it's a trailer for an elite surfing event.

I sent this clip to an old housemate who happens to be a female journalist for Le Tag Parfait – "The first French magazine on culture and porn for the Youporn generation."  She commented: "Eugh, Roxy or X-Art? It's well done, really erotic. I'm not sure how other women will react. It seems targeted at men. You'll probably receive a lot of comments saying that there is too much use of sex, that it's degrading for women. But I like it personally. It's a beautiful use of soft porn in advertising."

Days following its release the internet has lit up with debate how female surfing is marketed to us and what it means.

Ted Endo of The Inertia wrote in his (excellent) piece
"Let’s not pile all the heat on Roxy for this one, though. HTC, Jeep, Biarritz and Aquitane Tourism, MeltyXtreme and Virgin Radio have all invested here. These are the people spending money on women’s surfing (so…that’s good), and this is the image they want to project (not so good). The choice, then, seems to be between having no investment, or having investment that requires a lot of ass in front of the camera – and all our leering eyes on the other side of the lens. The problem is that this isn’t a real choice. It’s a sucker’s bargain, and the only type of growth it will promote is making women’s competitive surfing into a Reef Girl contest."

And Roxy released a statement that included these comments:
"...Obviously, there’s been much conversation around the video we recently released. We believe all athletes are naturally beautiful, in and out of the water. You certainly don’t have to be sexy to be an athlete, & we also believe it’s not wrong to be an athlete and to be sexy, if you choose to be. We don’t judge one to be better than the other & we don’t believe in excluding one for the other.Thank you for the passionate thoughts shared on the video, & for expressing how much you respect women in surfing...."

Wait a second... this talk is far too serious for the stupidity that is This Week In Suring. Quickly, to the CW mathematics department for a graph!

The CW Editorial Mathematics Department have once again outdone themselves with this superb graph.

2. Peaking With Carlos Burle
In which Red Bull make a very very good short documentary on big wave riding.

You don't get sick of seeing clips from that swell at Chopes when they are done this well. Red Bull continue to be amongst the leaders in content production in the world of surfing. A+

3. Aus Open of Surfing Back For 2014
In which we celebrate the return of a major surfing event to Sydney...

On Wednesday it was announced that the Australian Open of Surfing will return to Manly in 2014 after it was called off in 2013. While the surf wasn't all-time at its inaugural event in 2012, anyone who was lucky enough to attend will know just how great a spectacle it was, and how good it is to have a major surfing event back on in Sydney. The skating was pretty amazing too, the hangovers less so.

The winner of the first Aus Open of Surfing back in 2012, Sally Fitz, is stoked the major surf event to return to Sydney.

4. Tour Notes In Bali

The best web series around the ASP checks in from the Oakley Pro Keramas.

5. John Florence At Keramas

6. Josh Kerr in Hawaii

Offcuts from Kerrsy's upcoming profile movie, which is going to be sooooo great, we can't wait, to see our mate, obliterate... or something.

7. Dusty Payne: Strange Brains
In which Dusty's Volcom Clip is the best of the series...

Remember Dusty before the injuries, before he dove deep into the world of high end compeittion? Best surfer in the world some said and this here is a reminder why. if Dusty wins Chopes in a monthdon't be surprised.

8. Mr Price Pro, Ballito
In which One of the Primes is off and running...

There are only 8 Prime Events run in a year, and if you want a realistic chance of getting (or staying) on the World Tour, you need to win one. Right now South Africa is hosting this Mr. Price Pro and through to Round 5 from Australia are Julian Wilson and Stu kennedy. High profile surfers in the same round include Jordy Smith, Kolohe Andino, and Filipe Toledo. Australians yet to surf in Round 4 are Thomas Woods, Dion Atkinson, and Mitch Crews. You can watch all the action over here: http://www.mrpricepro.com/

9. Groms, So Many Groms
3 Comps, 3 Million Frothers...

It's school holidays and there have been no shortage of events for the young competitive surfers enjoying them. First up, the tenth Occy's Grom Comp. Which was taken out by Reef Doig, Sandon Whitaker and Mikey McDonagh in their respective divisions of the boys' side of the event, and Isabelle Nichols, Billie Melinz in their divisions in the girls' side of the event. Then there was Chippa Wilson's Kustom Mini-Strike taken out by Kalani Ball. And now there is the Skullcandy Oz Grom Open at Lennox. Too much fun!

10. Mexico, Gigante
In which Arirtz Aranburu gets very very barrelled...

Actually… is this the best clip of this week? Why is this number 10? Oh well. Click play and see some pretty freaking epic Mexican barrels. Oh man…

Bonus – Mexico with Chancho

Speaking of Mexico, Sterling Spencer's brillaint short series of Chancho Libre's  surf trip is now available as one continuous clip. The best!

And that was this week in surfing. CW out.
