Ten Things Surfing Gave The Internet This Week

It's been a month a half since Parko was carried up the beach at Keramas as winner of the Oakley Pro Bali. A month and a half since the last major World Tour event for the men! Can you imagine if you had to wait a month and a half between rounds 11 and 12 in the AFL or NRL or NBA or whatever other sport? There'd be riots! Maybe that's why people knocked over portaloos at the US Open. Maybe not... Actually probably not... anyway, Teahupoo is on and other things happened. Awesome!

The meditative setting of the most thunderous break on the World Tour.

The meditative setting of the most thunderous break on the World Tour.

1. The Billabong Pro Tahiti Kicked Off

Chopes has started in what was really pretty mediocre Chopes by Chopes standard. Funny thing about this wave, is that when it's not great, it's still pretty amazing (like Pizza!). Just ask Anthony Walsh, the Australian turned Hawaiian finally won a place in the event after coming very very close more than once in previous years. His first heat out there today and bam. 10. How do you like that? He then disposed of Nat Young in Round 2. Other upsets include Taj bowing out of the comp to wildcard Ian Walsh, and Adriano De Souza bumped out by Trials winner Alain Riou. Yikes.

2. Nti Sheeto

Dion Agius is a talented man. He directed this very very good film from Indonesia starring Ozzie Wright, Thom Pringle, Creed McTaggart, Warren Smith and himself. Released just this week, alright!

3. Steph is, like, amazing

If you dig surfing in any way shape or form, you're going to dig this video of Stephanie Gilmore sliding around some Mexico points. This is surfing at its most beautiful.

4. Rip Curl Cup Padang

The Rip Curl Cup ran on Sunday in just the kind of perfect barrels you expect of such an excellent event. Mega Semadhi took the first place troph, and a stellar performance from 16-year-old Jacob Wilkox saw the Margaret River goofy-foot take second place for the biggest result of his young career. Big things…

5. Skeleton Bay Looks Fun

After Craig Anderson's film Slow Dance was released last week the amazing sequences of Skeleton Bay have been keeping us up at night. Burning into our memories. Replaying over and over. Often interrupting our thoughts mid sentence, causing conversations to trail off into nothingness, till you're just standing there and someone is looking at you while you have no idea what you were talking about. It was just so good. Coastalwatch Chief Swell Forecaster Ben Macartney silently cried when he saw the footage. True story. Anyway, this week some incredible drone footage of the Namibian break hit the interweb.

6. Who doesn't Love Asher Pacey?

Answer: No-one. Could watch this guy surf all freaking day. Great clip from Young, Free, Alright! filmmaker Darcy Ward.

7. Jamie O'Brien vs Ricardo Di Santos…

How's this for a weird surfing story. In the trials for the Billabong Pro Tahiti, a paddle battle saw Ricardo Di Santos and Jamie O'Brien take-off on the same wave in their heat. Ricardo took off on the inside, but Jamie O'Brien, frustrated with the situation allegedly turned around and hit Ricardo in the face. IN THE FACE! After the incident Ricardo posted to Instagram, "Thanks, Jamie O’Brien, for punching me in the face during my heat in the trials….” before Jamie and Ricardo shaking hands and making peace later that evening. Except for this… Jamie O'Brien told Stab that while he accepted the fight was wrong, his side of the story hadn't really been told, that he was originally on the inside in the paddle battle and Ricardo elbowed him in the scuffle for take-off. On top of that, he was disappointed with Ricardo's behaviour during Jamie's apology: “I shook hands, everything was cool, but he asked me to put my head down when I shook the hand, and I was disappointed with the, like, 'Jamie O’Brien bowing down to me' thing. I went back and apologised and did the right thing, but hey, he did wrong too, I wasn’t the only one. I’m not an asshole and that’s not what I was pushing for. But it took off on social media.”

8. Speaking of Chopes…

Kalani Chapman gives us the ultimate view of the wave, from its bowels (that sounded weird, sorry).

9. Matt Banting Levels Up

When Matt Banting was in Californ-I-A coming third in the US Open at Huntington Beach, he was also ripping in the other times. The non-US Open times. The good times.

10. Kerrsy Gets Barrelled

Is there a week that goes by without us posting an awesome Kerrsy clip? This one is particularly awesome.

Bonus…

This is what everyone eats when they are at the Billabong Pro Tahiti. Everyone. The surfers. The team managers. The event staff. The judges. The media. The hangers on. Everyone. And it is delicious. Local super-legend Michel Bourez makes it for the camera.

And that was This Week In Surfing. Have a good weekend. CW out.
