Ten Things Surfing Gave The Internet This Week
Arranged by Mike Jennings
Remember when John Stamos was in the Beach Boys? As a child who grew up with Beach Boys records playing throughout the house, it was quite alarming to find out that piece of information. One night past my bedttime on Rage, I learnt that Jessie from Full House played steel drums on Kokomo... but how? Beach Boys were a 60s pop act. Full House was from the 90s. It was all very confusing and alarming for a 10 year old. And where the hell was Brian Wilson? It made no sense. And neither does this intro. So... here are the ten most surf-internet things from the internet the last seven days.
1. Parko For Sport's Dad of The Year
The champ has been nominateed for the Philips Sport's Dad of The Year Award. He so deserves it too. Travelling around the world as a pro surfer with a family is a pretty tough task, and to win a World Title while doing so, amazing. In fact, as we enter the Father's Day weekend we'd like to give props to all our Australian tour surfers doing it with children in tow. Bede, Kieren Perrow, Yadin, Josh Kerr, Glenn Hall and Matt Wilkinson, we salute you. Have a good Father's Day. To celebrate, here's our video of Parko getting shacked a few weeks back. You can vote for Parko over here.
2. Jules Gets High in Bondi
Yikes. Julian Wilson can do airs. Here he is doing the airs in the Bondi waters with Kai Hing and Matt Wilkinson for One Fine Day in Bondi… S. Ya think Jules is looking good for the event by the train tracks?
3. Hurley Pro Trestles Trailer
The next stop on the World Tour is Trestles and this is the excellent trailer for the event, we think filmmaker Riley Blakeway had something to do with it. Hi Riley. Hope you're well friend.
4. Any Clip With The Saints!!!
Seriously, I'd watch youtube clips of digital chess game tutorials (a favourite pastime of our Chief Swell Forecaster Ben Macartney, no joke…) if it was cut to the Saints. Hell, I'd even watch The Big Bang Theory if it was cut to a soundtrack by The Saints. I know, this is serious. This is a clip of high performance surfing at Trestles cut to the Saints though, so it is really very good.
5. Woe is Billabong
A few days ago The Age reported some things. Some bad things about Billabong. Under the headline "Billabong brand worthless as loss blows out" they reported the company declared an $859.5 million loss for the fiscal year of 2013. To put that into context, that's 1,119,375,000 killer pythons (at 80 cents a Killer Python from the milk bar in Narrabeen). End to end that's 3,470,062.5 kilometres. Enough killer pythons to stretch end to end around the circumference of the earth 86 and a half times, and that's without stretching them. Such a waste… of Killer Pythons... read the full non-killer python themed article here.
6. Red Bull Storm Chase
It's not often we post windsurfing stuff, so when we do you know it's with good reason. How hammered do these windurfers get in big stormy Tassie? Windsurfers are kind of bad-arse. Who knew?
7. Aquabumps Do The Great Ocean Road
A beautifully shot clip that sees Eugene Tan of Aquabumps take his operation on the iconic Great Ocean Road with professional surfers Chris Friend and Todd Rosewall while using the Coastalwatch Plus Wave Tracker to score.
8. Forever Mason Ho
The world needs more footage of Mason Ho being awesome. Thankfully, here is a new clip of Mason Ho being awesome/surfing in a contest in the nude.
9. Pro Juniors Take Note
This is an entertaining and kind of tragic surf clip of the Lost team in Cab San Lucas featuring the story of ex-QS campaigner Matt King. Well worth your time. Also, the close-out beachbreak surfing of Mason Ho is as entertaining as everything else Mason does, like above. Great.
10. Tom Jennings – Excellent
Tom Jennings has an excellent surname. Not only that, he is an excellent surf filmmaker from the excellent state of Western Australia. This is an excellent clip featuring his boy Ry Craike as well as Creed Mctag-tag, Jay Davies, Davey Cathels, Kerby Brown, Matt Baldock and the young rising star you saw in the Billabong film Alley Oop, Taj Burrow.
Bonus: Alex and Koa Smith Head South of The Border
No, not to Tasmania, silly, to Central America! Nicaragua and Mexico to be a tad more precise. And they get super super barrelled. I'd be so lost as to what was going on in this clip if they didn't have models in bikinis spliced into it. #Narrative
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend. CW out.
