Ten Things Surfing Gave The Internet This Week

Kai Otton will forever avoid the label of 'journeman' after getting an World Tour notch on the belt.

Kai Otton will forever avoid the label of 'journeman' after getting an World Tour notch on the belt.

1. Kai Otton wins Portugal, The World Cheers

At 33 years of age, and in his seventh year on the Tour, Kai Otton has found serious form on the World Tour in 2013. A couple quarter-final finishes, a semi at the Billabong Pro Tahiti, and now this, the trophy at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal – his first major event win. To say we're stoked for the guy would be a major understatement. Yeah Otts! You can read Sean Doherty's full rundown of the Rip Curl Pro Portugal here: Coastalwatch | Coastalwatch Plus

2. The World Title Goes To Pipe

When Kelly Slater went out in straight sets in Portugal, the door was left swinging open for Mick Fanning to win the World Title this week. Not only was it left open, it was rattling around making a racket in the Peniche breeze with everyone getting ready to hail hail Mick the three time Champ. If he made the final, the crown was his, if he made the semis, only an event win from Taj, Mick, or Parko would keep the Title race alive. But, it was not to be, as this was Kai Otton's day and he took MIck Fanning down in the semi on his way to collecting his Rip Curl Pro trophy, and his new biggest fan, Mr. Kelly Slater.

The World Title Race Scenario Now:

– Only Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning can win the World Title.

– Mick Fanning is guaranteed a World Title if he makes the semi-finals.

– Kelly Slater must win the Pipe Masters, with Mick falling before the semis, for him to take his 12th World Title.

– No Pipe Masters win for Kelly, and it's all Mick's

3. The new ASP, A New Logo, New Partners

During the week the ASP released its new logo as well as announcing Youtube, ESPN and Facebook as their major media partners. The short of it is that this is the first official announcement that all World Tour event coverage will be able to be found in one place online, rather than five different sponsors' event sites like we have now. The long of it is that... we stil don't really know a whole lot about the ASP season for 2014, except that it's exciting. Check the new ASP site.

4. Nat Young Is The ASP Rookie of The Year

The 1966 and 1970 World Champion from Collaroy Australia has been named ASP Rookie of The Year a full 49 years after he finished runner-up in the Australian Junior Championships at Manly. Weird! Congratulations Nat. Here's a vid from his stellar performance at Bells earlier this year:

5. High Line by Young, Wise Tails

By the powers of Gerlach! Conner, Parker, Taylor and Tanner (sounds like a great American boyband) give the world a lesson on modern power in this epic almost feature length (by internet standards) clip from South Africa.

6. Dinner For Deux – Dane and Ando In France

Ahhhh, after watching this I'm getting on the phone to my best mate and planning a European surf trip (if I had money... or friends...) It's gonna be killer. Also, loving that Sonny and The Sunsets song at 3.10.

7. Mikala Jones Gets Piped

Watch some of the best Point-Of-View footage surfing has seen. I can't get barrelled (ever) so this, Crystal Voyager and Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer on the Xbox is all I got. Who's with me?! *cough*

8. Kelly In Nazare

You wonder why Kelly gets frustrated losing in poor surf? It's because wherever he's surfing on the World Tour, he's usually just come from somewhere in the world that has been absolutely pumping. This time it wasn't even so far away, the famed Portuguese heaving beachie, Nazare.

9. Is This The Funniest Clip of 2013

We say yes! Van-life, by the same people who brought us The Shaper last year. Too great!

10. Our Pal Tyler

A great little clip on Young, Free, Alright filmmaker Tyler Bell was put together by the good people at ABC Open. Stoked! See the full story on the ABC Open site.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. CW out.
