This Week In Surfing? What's that? Well, it's been a while, so let's reintroduce you to surfing's least important weekly column. Every Friday you can expect a wrap of the best and most interesting things that happened in the world of surfing on the internet in the past 7 days. That's pretty much it. We think everyone can agree that it is a groundbreaking concept worthy of Walkely and Pulitzer-like recognition. Anyway... here are ten things. Peew peew peew.

1. Noa Deane Is The Rad

Noa Deane released this clip titled Cheese. Yeah, it's a little air-rev heavy for an edit over seven minutes, but there's enough hight in those jumps and quality rail game in there to say Noah Deane is the rad! Every one of his clips has been featured in This Week In Surfing in the past with each drop improving on the last, this clip keeps that tradition rolling. Credit to Shane Fletcher on the edit: Offbeat and eccentric – great!

2. The Volcom Pipe Pro Is Coming, So Here Is A Trailer

For about three seconds I thought the song for this trailer was going to be Queens of The Stone Age’s Feel Good Hit of Summer. Then it wasn’t. Anyway, the Volcom Pipe Pro is consistently the best comp outside of the World Tour every single year, because... Pipeline! Event starts Jan 26 Hawaii time.

3. The Kirra Ralley Happened

Did you follow this? Plans for a ridiculous Cruise Ship Terminal/Casion at North Kirra met serious opposition from the Gold Coast and International surfing community. Then the QLD Premier stepped in amd canned it. While it's been a tad confusing as to which forms of government are supporting what, and who is proposing what, where, it is an amazing and positive feat to see so many surfers band together for the betterment of our coasts. Hats off to everyone involved. To read further about the controversial Cruise Ship Terminal proposal, check Jock Serong's analysis of the events for Coastalwatch

4. Matt Banting's 2013

This was Matt Banting’s year of surfing in 2013, and no joke, it is so much better than my year of surfing in 2013. Absurd! But seriously, how well rounded has young Mr. Banting become. Knocking on the door of the World Tour for sure.

5. Carpark Stories Trailer

This movie from the rising talent of filmmaker Toby Cregan has been brewing for a while now and we’re stoked to finally get a good look at its lovely trailer. Feel the Australiana within its frames. Daniel Johnston on the soundtrack too, winner.

6. Date With The Strait

How’s these guys for ballsy? Aussie Molokai Champions Brad Gaul and Zeb Walsh as well as 18-year-old Californian Jack Bark are going to paddle from Victoria to Tassie in what they’re calling A Date With The Strait. Epic stuff. In similar news I was thinking of doing the Big Swim from Palm Beach to Whale Beach with no training on Sunday, but have since chickened out because apparently you can’t wear a wetsuit. Both are big stories from surfing this week.

7. Jaws Happened

Have you seen Jaws this clean and perfect before? This happened a few days ago and was pretty wow.

And now once more from the air. 2014, year of the drone. 2015 year of new international drone laws... and lawsuits.

8. Mavericks Is On!

The Body Glove Mavericks Invitational presented by GoPro will run on Friday January 24... webcast starts at 2am AEDST on Red Bull's website. If it's anything like the operating system it's going to be very slow, and make me hate my computer. Epic GoPro footage from last year's event below.

9. The new ASP.com launches next month…

The long drawn out anticipation of the new ASP still looms. But hey, here's some news: Graham Stapelberg is going to be the Chief Strategy Officer and there will be a new website dropping next month. What do you think the site will be like? Do you think it will have Flash Games on it like every major brand had on their sites back in 1999? Or will it revolutionise everything we have ever known about surf websites and blow our freaking minds like mysurf.tv did. We hope both.

10. Coolangatta Cat Skates The Gnar... or something

Look at this cat! Look at it! It’s a cat on a skateboard cruising around Coolangatta like it ain’t no thing. How sassy is this cat? This is mental! Just when you thought the Mad Hueys had the whole Gold Coast stunt scene on lock-down, this furry lump of attitude busts onto your screens. Shit man. Them Cooly streets are crazy.

Bonus...

Did you know that Spirit of Akasha – Andrew Kidman's epic film in tribute to Morning of The Earth – premieres at Sydney Festival on Saturday night. It plays at the Opera House with a ridiculous line-up of live music including G Wayne Thomas and Pond. The short doco below was produced as part of its release and is very very good.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. CW out.
