10 Things From The Last 7 Days of Surfing On The Internet

By Mike Jennings

I watched the webcast of the final at the Volcom Pipe Pro yesterday and I grimaced when Kelly won. A Kelly win, again? Boring... What's that? 56 event wins? Something like that. I wanted Mason Ho to win. I love Mason. His style. His vibe. His relative freshness. He represents everything I love about surfing. But then I thought about it.... Imagine if anyone else in the world was in that photo below. If that were some young Australian in that wave with that poise, say Creed McTaggart or Matt Banting, I. Would. Lose. My. Mind! Look at that trailing arm! It is the sickest. Imagine the future when we don't have Kelly blowing our minds over and over with images like this in a contest rashie no less. Will this be Kelly's last year on tour? Maybe. And as soon as he's gone, we'll be missing him. But what else happened in this week in surfing. LOTS OF THINGS!!! Pew, pew pew, lazers.

Kelly Slater is such a boss. Look at this photo, just look at it. Photo: Bielmann/volcompipepro.com

1. Loaded | Dane Reynolds Releases Epic 20 Minute Surf Movie

Not a lot more to say. Another brilliant release from surfing’s best independent website, Dane’s Marine Layer Productions. Apart from a return to epic by Dane himself the flick features a great performance by rising Australian freesurfer Noa Deane (2014, the year of Noa Deane!) Also some classic rail surfing from Taylor Knox who is looking to have a very prosperous post competition freesurfing careeer. Craig Anderson’s in there too as is Warren Smith, Andrew Doheny and Nat Young. 15 stars out of 10.

2. Volcom Pipe Pro | Kelly Wins, Mason Stars

The best surf comp outside the World Tour had a slow start, but as usual its final day delivered. Surprisingly John John and Jamie O’Brien went out early when the surf was perhaps a tad more fickle, but come the final day Kelly Slater looked as unbeatable as ever, no-one looked like going near him save for one super awesome happy rad vibe guy, Mason Ho, who surfed Pipe and Backdoor on a huge board, showed epic style and poise and was awarded surfer of the event. Kelly of course won the final, because that’s what he does. I mean, have a look at that image at the top of this article… what a freaking boss. Props to Brent Dorrington and Mitch Coleborn on excellent performances too.

3. A Pleasurable Experience | Cyrus Sutton

Few people can sum up the simple beauty of living life as a surfer like Cyrus Sutton (Stoked and Broke, Korduroy.tv) does in his films and projects. His latest 8 minute clip detailing a 4 day California road trip, titled A Pleasurable Experience, is no exception.

4. Midlife Crisis | Bainy Is Ripping

Rob Bain’s son Billy dropped this edit of his dad ripping around Sumbawa, the Mentawais and Sydney during the week and it’s really really hard not to get stoked out watching it. What a legend!

5. So Hard To Watch That You'll Watch It Thrice

Oh man, the perfect horrible connection of board to head, the beautiful dark music of No Surprises by Radiohead, it all makes for major wow! Just wow. A lot of keyboard warriors have been throwing down comments on this video that she shouldn't have been paddling for the wave someone was already on, but clearly they are both learning. The victim in this incident is reportedly fine and the surfer riding the board that hit the woman smack-bang IN THE HEAD! apologised and both continued surfing. Lovely...

6. Waimea Lagoon Surfing | Surfing Is Fun

Remember in Endless Summer 2 when they dig out the lagoon at Waimea? Ahhh it was the best. Jamie O’Brien, Jack Robinson, Kalani Chapman and some other people did that this week too. Yay, surfing yay!

7. Kai Hing | Australian Open of Surfing Wildcard

The Hurley Australian Open of Surfing 2014 hits Manly for a full week including two weekends from this Saturday! Dane Reynolds and Julian Wilson and Kai Otton and Sally Fitz and Tyler Wright and Carissa Moore and about 150 more surfers will take part in the 5 Star ASP event. Kai Hing, the polished Sunny Coast teenager, scored a wildcard to the event too. We dig this behind the scenes clip of him getting prepped for the event by Hurley.

8. Speaking of The Australian Open | Filipe Toledo

Any guesses who will dominate in the beachbreak surf of Manly? Julian Wilson? Matt Banting? Perhaps young Filipe Toledo is a likely candidate to take out the comp with his small wave to huge air repertoire.

9. Fabulous Gems | Josh Kerr in Israel

Futura, washed out colours and slow electro to slow motion surfing. Let’s get nostalgic for 2012! Jokes. Good clip tho. Kerrsy’s the man. Local Israeli surf filmmaker was filming a friend when Josh Kerr paddled out. Right place, right time.

10. Billabong At Mullaghmore, Ireland

Big wave surfing's just so hot right now. When I think about surfing I think about nice little peeling righthanders sliding down Byron's The Pass. Post-surf beers on the sand. Jokes and laughter and friends and fun. Same time tomorrow? Sure thing... oh look, dolphins. I don't think of this ugly thing. I am a boy, and these here are real men like the ones in Game of Thrones and Braveheart. As the saying goes: different folks, different giant cold water death monster nightmare slabs.... or something like that.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. CW out
