A Wavepool For Melbourne, The Start of The Triple Crown, Filipe Toledo Is Ridiculous – This Week In Surfing
Ten Things From Surfing and The Internet On The Week That Was November 14, 2014
Presented by the Subway Summer Surf Series
Last night the team from Surfing World and Coastalwatch went into the city of Sydney and attended a soiree in honour of Craig Anderson and his latest range of sunglass frame by Electric. The team returned at 4am. And today has proved to be particularly trying. Surfing World Art Director Danny Johnson has been walking around aimlessly in the Northern Beaches suburb of Avalon. He bought a coconut water thinking it would make him happy, but upon consuming the drink found he still felt empty inside. Surfing World Editor Vaughan Blakey bounced back with a surprising sprightliness. “Why is he so okay, and I am in so much pain?” asked Danny Johnson. “Is it because he is wearing a Mad Hueys hat?” The team agreed it was. And with that we bring you ten things from surfing and the internet this week. Enjoy.
1. A Wave Pool For Melbourne
Earlier this week Melbourne Newspaper The Age reported that a wave pool has been proposed for Melbourne’s Docklands. Apparently the design, a floating pool, would produce 1 to 1.5 metre barrels, would be heated and filtered. As someone who has swam in Melbourne’s Yarra river for a dare, and gotten very very sick as a result, that’d wanna be one hell of damn good filter.
2. The Triple Crown Has Started
The Reef Hawaiian Pro has started at Haleiwa and the Triple Crown defending champ Zeke Lau has been in fine form. Here is the first perfect 10 of the Hawaiian season by Olamana Eleogram, who even with this was bundled out of the comp due to an interference. But would you have a look at this thing. To borrow a prahse from the ol' commentary of Sean Doherty, "He had no right to make that wave."
3. Filipe Toledo Is The Man
The young Brazillian won this Prime Event that was on in somewhere, I'm not sure, but this comp highlights clip from the event, again, not sure where it was, is just amazing, including one of the best aerials ever stomped in a heat jersey.
4. Mark Mathews Stokes Out Groms In China
Mark Mathews is the man. One of the good guys. And here he is revisiting Hainan Island and helping a bunch of groms get super stoked on surfing.
5. Meet Stevie Pittman, 14 Year Old Super Shredder
Sigh... guys, I'm starting to get the feeling that at 28 years old now I'll never get the chance to be a 14 year old super shredder. I'll never even be 14 years old again.... sigh.
6. Nanda Ormond x Rhythm
It's the third installment of Nanda Ormond's animations for the Rhythm boardshort range and it is so great. Nanda Ormond slept on my couch for a week once and my neighbour developed a crush on him. I can see why they would, he's a pretty lovely guy. Hey Anna.
7. Metal Neck In Portugal
Andrew Doheny, Creed McTaggart and Wade Goodall surf some fun waves in and around Portugal. I love these guys. Three years ago I interviewed Andrew Doheny at the Steyne Hotel in Manly. We were meant to talk about shaping surfboards but we just ended up talking about lego. To this day, it is the best interview I have ever done... about lego... with Andrew Doheny.
8. Torrey Meister, Diamond Blanket
Just a sick surf clip. Nothing else much to say. The waves kind of remind me of that old Rip Curl movie Chocolate Barrels. My brother owned that when i was 12 and just starting high school at St. bede's College in Mentone. One day he lent it to a mate, and that mate's little brother brought it into school and showed everyone and he got heaps of cred for it with all the cool kids that I wasn't cool enough to hang out with. It was heaps unfair.
9. Attractive Distractions Trailer
Do you ever go online to pirate a movie and start watching a couple of trailers to help you decide which movie you are going to watch, and then an hour has passed and all you have done is watch movie trailers and you don't even feel like watching a movie anymore? No? Well, if this trailer popped up in a trailer watching binge you'd be pretty stoked. You might even go to Itunes and buy the thing. 10 of the best young progressive surfers charge and shred and travel and do all the awesome things we love watching them do, Attractive Distractions looks like one of the better surf films to come out in 2014.
10. Kiwi Mad Grom Going HAM In Nias
His name is Elliot Paerata Reid and he is very good at riding very good waves.
Scott Whip Dennis gets whipped. The best thing about watching wipeout videos is that it isn't you. Unless you're reading this Scott, in which case, hey man, been loving your shots this year, you're the man.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.CW out.
