It's Nearly Christmas And We Still Don't Have A World Champion – This Week In Surfing
Ten Things From Surfing and The Internet On The Week That Was December 19, 2014

Guys, I did not expect to be walking out of the office to the Christmas party without knowing who the 2014 World Champion is. I really didn't. I thought it was all going to go down last weekend, and this week would be spent twiddling our thumbs and counting down the days till Christmas. Instead we're twiddling our thumbs and counting the days since Pipe last run (5!). And the worst part is, they're losing our interest. We're all busy. The shopping centre carparks are full and my dad's Christmas present is not going to buy itself. I've got a Christmas party to go to and I've got food that has to be eaten... I can't be thinking about Gabby and Mick and Kelly and John John and who is better at Backdoor and who is better at Pipe while I've got awkward Christmas party chat to attend to. I've got to ask people what they're doing over the break. Are they flying home? Do they see the husband's family? Oh, they change it every year. North this year, south next year... interesting! That'll all change when they hit go though. This weekend is going to be spent on the couch, watching Pipe. And no presents will be bought. Sorry Dad. Anyway, here are the ten things...
1. The Waiting Game of The Pipe Masters
The Pipe Masters ran on Saturday and Sunday Australian time. They ran The Women's Pipe Invitational (which Carissa Moore won), The Heritage Heat (which Tom Carroll won) and Rounds 1 and 2. Round 2 on Sunday was a big unruly mess with glimpses of brilliance. Most surfers were getting through heats on single digit scores of 5s and 6s, except for Kelly and Jadson who both found ridiculous and terrifying 9 point rides that were everything we hope the Pipe Masters to be. Then they called the event off before lunch, and guess what? It got good. Really good. Third Reef Pipe good. All the Hawaiian chargers were out there, charging, and now everyone is throwing shade at ASP commissioner Kieran Perrow for making the call to not run. One of those most vocal and critical of the ASP is iconic surf-writer, historian and author of the Encyclopaedia of sufing, Matt Warsaw. He put together the below video, and sheesh is it catchy. In KP's defense, apparently by the time Pipe did start to get really really good it would have been too late to run the event. And had we not had a World Title on the line, people would probably be a little less anxious, and a little less critical.
2. Pipe Advice
Here's some advice on how to surf Pipe from the good people at Hurley Tour Notes. Y'know, just in case you're thinking of paddling out with Gerry and the boys next Hawaiian winter.
3. Are These The Biggest Waves Ever Surfed
Probably. This is straight up ridiculous. Last Thursday Nazare, Portugal played host to Garrett McNamara, Andrew Cotton, Sebastian Stuednter, Huge Vao, Tom Butler, Benjamin Sanchis, Eric Rebiere and Ross Clarke-Jones who played amongts the gazillion foot sets. Gazillion.
4. The Rip Curl Girls Score In Mexico
Tyler Wright, Niki Van Dijk, Pauline Ado and young Brisa Hennessy star in an excellent clip that really really really makes me want to go surf some righthand barrels somewhere.
5. Mikey Wright Surfing In France Is Super Rad
Woah woah woah, new favourite surfer alert. This clip shot by Wade Carroll of Mikey Wright in France is just banger after banger after banger. Cutting surfing to hip hop is notoriously hard to pull off, but right here they have nailed it and in doing so made one of the better clips of 2014.
6. That Pipe Rescue
If you wanted proof that the Hawaiian Water patrol are the best in the world, look no further. The timing and speed are everything.
7. Kelly's Pipeline Tutorial
Kelly Slater knows pretty much everything about everything and one of those things contianed within that everything is Pipeline, and here he tells us what he knows about the most famous wave in the world. Where to sit and the intracicies of Backdoor and Pipe.
8. Billabong New Zealand In Japan
I met someone from Mount Monganui at the Skeggs and Ruminaters gig near the SW office last night. That has nothing to do with this clip other than the fact that the guy who made it, Cam Neate, is from that sweet as little town on the North Island. He's hilarious. Hi Cam!
9. Go John John
Y'think Gabbby's the only one feeling the pressure of his people coming into Pipeline? Nuh-uh, John John's got the weight of the North Shore on his shoulders.
10. Craig Anderson And The Hypto Krypto
Is Hayden Shapes' Hypto Krypto the most popular board in the country? The world even? And is Craig Anderson and the Hypto the most synonymous surfer/board-model relationship of the modern era? Just some questions I thought of while watching HS's new Ando Hypto clip. You should answer them in the comments below so I can have something to read standing awkwardly at this afternoon's Christmas party. Cheers.
Bonus... What Are You Doing On New Year's Eve?
Because our favourite band, Skegss, are playing at Lost Paradise Festival, an hour and a half north of Sydney at the old Peat's Ridge Fest site. Also on the bill are Boy & Bear, AlunaGeorge, Ball Park Music, The Preatures, Sylvan Esso, Pond and heaps more. They're labelling it a boutique festival, which if you read between the lines means less dickheads, and more fun. Speaking of dickheads, how catchy is Skegss newest song? Answer:Very catchy. Tickets and more info over here.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend and Christmas everyone. Look after your mates.
