Mick & Moore Win Bells, Dorian's Go-Pro Barrel Is One of The Greatest Ever – This Week In Surfing
Ten Things From Surfing and The Internet On The Week That Was April 10, 2015
Is there anything better than a nice toasty sleep-in on a cold morning after a long week? There isn't. There really isn't. That's what I'm doing tomorrow morning. I think I have the flu. How lame is that? The last week we've been getting up to cold, windy dawns and checking out the Rip Curl Pro at Bells. It's been awesome. Even when it's been awful, and some of that surf truly was awful, it's been awesome. The last two mornings we even did our own alternate commentary, #TheBadcast, with Rob Bain and the Surfing World team and it was so bad. It was so bad that it was actually great. But enough about us, how have you been? Did you enjoy the surfboarding this week? You did? Sick one. I'm stoked for you friend. Here are the top ten things from surfing and the internet this week.
1. Mick Fanning Won A Fourth Bells, Is Pretty Much The Sickest Dude Ever
How good is he? Mick Fanning is the best. He won Bells this week in the tightest final of pro surfing's modern era, tieing with Adriano De Souza and winning on a count back. It's his fourth Bells win, which puts him in the esteemed company of MR and Kelly. He leaves Bells as the World No.1 with Filipe, and thinking about World Titles. He also met my dad this week and was happy to get a photo with him in the car-park at Bells, which has pretty much made my year.
Here is an unrelated list of other people my dad met at Bells this week: Ronnie Blakey, Luke Kennedy, Ed Sloane, Sean Doherty, Reggae Ellis, Matt Dunbar, a Brazillian journalist from a Brazillian surf magazine... and he also saw Steph Gilmore in a cafe at Jan Juc. Epic stuff.
2. Carissa Moore Also Won Bells
Hawaiian superstar Carissa Moore made it three Bells titles in a row with a victory over the World Champ Stephanie Gilmore today. That's the first person to win three Bells in a row since Mark Richards in the late 70s, which is pretty rad. Rissa never looked like losing in the comp, the form surfer of the event, and a just winner for all surf fans. Next event takes the tour to a macking Margaret River for the Drug Aware Pro, to which Carissa Moore must be rubbing her palms together anticipating furthering her lead as World No.1.
3. Mick Fanning Ripping Mexico In 2011 Is Basically Perfection
Basically, yeah. This week some footage from Mexico in 2011 came out of nowhere and hit us in the face with its radness. Right in the face. Just like, bam, woah, what hit me in the face just now? Oh, it's Mick Fanning at Mexico in 2011. Weird, Anyway, how good is the guy surfing perfect Mexican sand bottom right points in 2011-length board shorts? Should I tone down my love for Mick Fanning? It's getting out of hand isn't it? Umm... nah.
4. Garrett Parkes Joins The Afends Team
Yay. Who doesn't love stickers? Garrett Parkes likes them on his board and lucky for him he got some new ones from the crew at Afends. The Byron shredder has joined the team at the rising Byron surf label and with it comes this dreamy welcome clip. Some of the waves are just so... *closes eyes and clenches fist* so perfect.
5. Dion Surfs In Slow Motion For Epokhe
And it's super nice to watch. Good onya Dion. You're the best. Saw on young photographer Mikey Macarthur's Snapchats today that you guys are on the hunt for some waves. With some oomph in the swell around the East coast of NSW today, no doubt you bagged some clips.
6. Parker Coffin Is All Grown Up and Surfing Incredibly Well
How good at surfboard riding is Parker Coffin. What isn't there to love about this clip? Good Song: Check. Tight Editing: Check. Powerful Rail Surfing: Check. Full Rotation Airs: Check. Tubes: You better believe that's a Check. Bravo Parker, Bravo.
7. Cooper Chapman Does Six Days In Indo
Lakeys and Bali. The narrabeen former kid, new adult, does some air, does some rail, does some barrel. Boards are looking knifey aren't they? Get on the QS and win a Prime already, Cooper. You got this.
8. Chippa Wilson Joins Tean Nixon, Doesn’t Do Airs In Clip
Watch out, Chippa is on Nixon now (see what I did there? Nixon is a watch company, I know it’s bad. Don’t worry, this almost over…). This is his short welcome clip and features some pretty good tuberiding. One of the lesser-known things about Chippa is that he kinda charges and is very adept at riding the tube. Kinda like how Laurie Towner is mostly known for charging Shippies and Chopes, but is a freaking excellent normal wave surfer.
9. Lola Mignot Is Your New Favourite Logger
Beauty is many things. It is subjective and it is ever evolving, but one of the things beauty definitely is is grace on moving water, and grace on moving water is definitely found in this clip of young Mexican longboarder Lola Mignot. I'd never heard of Lola until a few weeks ago when Lauren Hill (Dave Rastovich's better half) gave her a little shout on the Instagram. I expect we'll be seeing a lot more of her in the coming years.
10. Shane Dorian's Go-Pro Clip Is The Kind of Thing Dreams Are Made Of
It's weird to be lording a Dorian clip these days that doesn't include million-foot waves, but that last barrel... oh wow that last barrel. It's so nice. Space and time is a fabric, and both certainly seem to stop when that thing slowly and continuously folds over itself.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. CW out.
