Jaws's Falling Man, Surfing In New York's Blizzard, and an Unridden Wave To Make You Livid – This Week In Surfing
Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was January 29, 2016
1. The Dill and Beeg Project
Two underrated stars from the cast of Cluster released their best of 2015 footage in this really nice super-edit called The Dill and Beeg Project. One time I got introduced to Dillon Perillo outside the Rip Curl store on the Gold Coast. It was the middle of the day and there was no-one around. He had two bags full of Rip Curl clothes, you know, being his sponsor and all. We got left alone for a second so I said, “Been shopping, huh? He said, “Yeah.” I said, “You really love Rip Curl, huh?” And he said, “Yeah, it’s all I wear.” True story.
So, there was another ridiculous big wave session at Jaws this week, and with it there was another ridiculous wipe-out. His name is Tom Dosland and would ya just have a look at how much hang time he gets as he falls. Have you ever seen a person get flipped by their legrope like that? Have you ever seen a big wave leg-rope at full stretch like that? Have you ever seen a dog ride a miniature tricycle? Crazy!
Here’s a sweet compilation edit of the best times around the country over Christmas and New Year’s. Such times! WA, to Vicco, to the Sunny Coast, to North Sydney, to the Gold Coast, to South Australia, to Northern NSW, to South Sydney, to Mentone, it’s been a pretty fun time to not be at school, or at work... or in Canada.
Here’s an edit from Snapper this week that includes a very long barrel enjoyed by Mick Fanning. We’d mention that Mick maybe mighta dropped in on someone here, but Mick Fanning can do no wrong. Never. Ever. So that never happened. Anyway, count the seconds! There’s 24 of them. That’s enough for a shot clock violation. Which is almost as impressive as the guy walking in the foreground of the shot as it pans for a full 30 seconds. Hero.
5. Banjo Strings
Rob Machado and Ryan Burch filmed by space cowboy / surf filmmaker Jack Coleman is a recipe for a really groovy surf clip. Actual groovy, not groovy in an ironic way. And doesn’t Ryan Burch’s self shaped twin fin look magic? It’s only 4’11, which if it was just five feet shorter would actually be one inch long in another dimension.
6. Harrison Roach's Movie, Salvaged
This here is a black and white logging surf movie made from footage found on a Deus surfboards hard drive. It's all Indo, and cool, and graceful surfing from a time when everything was beautful and nothing hurt (the 2010s). Plus, that Conan Mockasin song at the 8 minute mark is a mod-psych-classic.
If there is one clip that might make you angry this week, it's this one. That guy! He was right there! Disclaimer, the author of This Week In Surfing has pulled back on far far far smaller waves at South Narrabeen.
8. John Florence and Friends and a North Shore January
There’s this cliche about Hawaii in January, about how all the non-local pros have gone home, the crowds have thinned, the least mellow of the locals have mellowed, and the North Shore has returned to the traditional Aloha spirit it’s famous for. Even the wipe-outs seem less deadly. This highlight clip from Jan on the North Shore certainly makes this feel to be true. Or perhaps that’s just that sweet old blues track talking…
9. John John and Novelty Wedges
How’s the double-up tubes John John, Jamie-O and Koa Rothman are scoring here? A strange movement of sand at Ehukai Beach Park created reef-suck type looking waves and some fun, but difficult looking cylinders for a few of the world's best pipeline surfers… novelty tubes are the best tubes!
Did you hear about snowgeddon? No? Basically it snowed a little bit in New York city, that's all really. Big deal, huh. But it kinda pumped on Long Beach, Long Island, New York at the same time, and Balaram Stack and a few brave souls were out there. Props. Balaram remains one of the world's finest tube ridersm, evident right here.
And another thing...
Here are the highlights of the Subway Surf Series's 4th event at Duranbah. A bunch of the best pro juniors in the country turned out with Kael Walsh of Margarets winning the boys' side and Macy Callaghan of Avoca winning the girls'. Plus, Parko was there! He's a legend. Stay tuned for the next event: Margaret River, WA – February 6-7, 2016.
And that was this week in surfing. Look after your mates and have a good weekend everyone.
