Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was June 23, 2017

1. Occy Sits Down With Gordon Merchant

Occy’s podcast is probably the best in the niche of the medium, it being hosted by Occy and all. It seems to get better with every episode, which is certainly the case here with the 1999 World Champion sitting down across from the man behind Billabong, and thus arguably one of the most influential men in modern surf history, Gordon Merchant. A lot of stories and reminiscing, plus the addition of some brilliant archival imagery, make for a wonderful walk down a surfing memory lane. As to be expected, the elephant in the room – the turmoils amongst the last half decade of Billabong – doesn’t get discussed, and that’s okay.

2. Hector Santamaria's Wacked Out Flip Thing

Do you know Hector Santamaria? He’s a Peurto Rican freeseurfer with a big goofy smile, loose lanky limbs, and freakish aerial ability who spends quite a lot of time surfing in Australia due to being the main team rider for Eye Symmetry surfboards. Now that you know about Hector, you should probably check out this outrageous flip he did this week that everyone’s struggling to get their heads around. Scrub to 2.45 to see it.

3. The Best Freesurfing From That Keramas Comp

In that brief period between the final event of the WSL CT Australian leg, and the Oi Rio Pro, the world’s best QS1,000 is run at one of the world’s most high performance waves, Keramas, Bali. Taj went. Seabass went. Mikey Wright went. Kai Otton went. Jack Robinson went, and so did heaps of others. This week we got gifted a two minute edit of the freesurfing that went down around the comp. Right from the opening wave, a gigantic Mikey Wright air-reverse, you know this clip is going to be a sick one.

4. Women In Surf, Images of Change

Here’s another episode from that Canon web series focussing on and discussing the relationship between imagery and women in surfing in 2017, featuring a roundtable with two time Bells winner Sally Fitzgibbons, World Junior Champion Macy Callaghan, style icon and pro long boarder Belinda Baggs, Rip Curl's queen of being awesome / digital GM Brooke Farris, and photographer Fran Miller. The highlight in this ep has to Belinda Baggs’ Surfer’s Journal cover. Absolutely classic.

5. Owen and Wiko's Vacay

If you follow either Matt Wilkinson (the World No.1!) or Owen Wright on social media, you’ll know that the two best mates and their respective girlfriends recently spent a dreamy week at a Maldivian resort somewhere. And would you look at these most playful looking lefts they scored? What fun it is to see Owen Wright surf a twin fin fishy looking shape on his forehand.

6. Chris Hemsworth Gets Barrelled

Seven days ago Chris Hemsworth, otherwise known as Thor, posted this mini clip to his 10.4 million followers on Instagram, getting himself a sweet cover-up with the help of Luke Munro and his jet-ski. Does this clip confirm Hemmy-poo as the no.1 surfer in Hollywood? It has to, right? Hem-diddy did a bunch of his growing up on Phillip Island where there isn't much to do other than go surfing and watch penguins, so you know he’s fair dinkum when it comes to being into surfing... and penguins. Sidenote, I watched the new female-led Ghostbusters on a plane recently, in which Hemsworth has a minor role, and he is hilarious in it. Good onya, Hemdog!

7. Mike Riley's Clip From The Right Is Beautiful

There's nothing like bit of atmospheric instrumental indie rock, some beautiful slow motion cinematography, and a couple of absolute freaking maniacs taking on one of the heaviest and most photogenic waves in the world. Mikey Wright brings us Kerby Brown. Chris Ross, Ben Rufus, Chris Shanahan, and more doing unfathomable things at The Right. It’s truly beautiful. It’s also the best unintentional ad for Coopers Red in the beer label’s history.

8. Torren Martyn In Nias

Torren Martyn’s an interesting cat. Ever noticed how he only ever appears in his own independent videos, with no-one else, and never seems to pop up in any other clips? Do people not like him? Does he smell or something? It can’t be due to his surfing, because his twin fin dedication the last two years has netted us some of the smoothest shred-viewing we’ve ever had the pleasure of watching on our laptops and iPhones. This week he and Surfstitch released this clip from a NIas strike mission and it is so fascinating to see Nias look not terrifying, fun even. Once again, Torren Martyn provides one of the best clips of the week.

9. Women In Surf – The Future

“You paddle into a line-up, right, is there some small feeling that you do sort of love when everyone expects you not to be able to stand up?” – Sally Fitzgibbons.

Just because, here's another episode from Women In Surf. This episode talks about the future of surfing, including the Olympics, and where Australian female surfing has come from and where it could go down the line.

10. Rob Machado Talks Through A Fun Session

Let’s watch Rob Machado shred a dreamy little French beach break, with Rob Machado. Cool, right? Rob gets on the mic and talks us through this afternoon session, and reveals he has a pretty smooth way with words: “I participated in some beverages.” “No leash, no problems.” “I love high-lines.” Good times.

Bonus... Podcasts Podcasts Podcasts

Another week, another fresh episode of The Dooley which for Ep 20 has us re-watch the 1981 Cronulla classic, Puberty Blues and quiz through all sorts of perf questions about fish face molls, gutless wonders, and an excellent Occy cameo.

And, yes, shredheads, waxheads, kooks and barneys, Ain't That Swell's Fiji wrap episode is live too. Where Jed and Vaughan talk about the glory of Matt Wilkinson, the idiocy of surf journalist wars, and nose beer conspiracies. Great as always

And that was this week in surfing, have a good week everyone.
