Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was November 10, 2017

1. Globe's New Movie Series: Cult of Freedom

This is called The Australia Part, and it's the first section in a new video series from Globe and their filmmaking maestro Joe G. And, most importantly, it's bloody brilliant. Starring the Globe team of nothing but freesurfing, freewheeling stars like Taj Burrow, Noa Deane, Creed McTaggart, Dion Agius and more, few surf films tap into the vein of the classic surf trip, surf adventure, surf movie that Cult of Freedom does here. At over 18 minutes, it's a bigger watch for the web, but it flies by. Ten hundred stars out of ten!

2. Kai Hing In Still Splashing

A follow up to Kai Hing and filmmaker Shane Fletcher's last collaboration from a bit under a year ago (Splashing), comes this banger of a surf clip pulled out of one week of surfing in the Telos Islands. There’s a slow building aggression in this clip, like an elastic band being pulled slowly slowly slowly. Then, released, and bang, Kai Hing is ripping. Very impressive for a single week of clip hunting. Would love to see what a year of Hing's best stuff would look like saved for a single section. P.S. Shane Fletcher… when’s that guy going to release full length feature? How do we make that happen?

3. Morgan Maassen's Jungle Is A-Grade, Beautiful Surf Imagery

Morgan Maassen, still only 27, has been one of surfing's sought after photographers and filmmakers for the better part of five years now. Busy with commercial work and other projects, like the cafe he's opened in California, Maassen had a backlog of unused, extraordinary footage from the last five years. So, recently, to kill time on a flight, he took those folders and put them into the long, incredible clip you see here. Noa Deane back in his Rusty days on a trip with Dillon Perillo and Sterling Spencer on some incredible righthanders in Mexico contends with the Steph Gilmore closing section for the best highlight of a video full with them.

4. The Hawaiian Triple Crown Started

The Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa has gotten underway with two days of competition and it's been pretty meh so far. The biggest piece of news for us Australian surf fans is that Mikey Wright got knocked in his Round 2 heat. He sits in 22nd place on the rankings before Haleiwa, and will need to halve that to get in the CT. He leaves one last chance to do so with the comp at Sunset, which will require a remarkable performance from the young star. But as we know, a Wright achieving a remarkable performance is well within the realms of possibility. On the flip-side, Wade Carmichael, the underdoggiest underdog in Aussie surfing, sits in 8th place and is looking steady for a shot at qualifying this Hawaiian winter.

I mused the other day on The Dooley podcast  that the best people to pick for the Triple Crown winner are often World Champion contending surfers who aren't contending the World Title in that year. EG, Mick Fanning or Adriano DeSouza. And by the looks of things in the last heat of Day 2, Adriano DeSouza might just make that happen. Please, Adriano, please make me look smart. I have nothing else.

5. Speaking of Hawaii: Pipeline

The first Pipeline clip of the Hawaiian winter comes our way this week via this relatively unknown, relatively unsponsored Lucas Godfrey. This video was put out by Jamie O'Brien, and shows the guy packing many a heavy tube with aplomb, so he's certainly got a future at surfing's most famous wave. Hit mute, though, and put on another song of your choosing. Perhaps a classical number. Anything, anything, anything other than this headache-maker.

6. WSL's Tyler Wright Mini-Doco

Oh shit, there’s a World Title race on the line. It’s happening. In nine days the women’s World Title showdown begins at Honolua Bay, and at its centre is the defending champion, our Tyler Wright! In build up to that, the WSL released this neat little documentary piece showing her incredible year in 2016 while looking towards the finale of 2017. Pumped!

7. The Dooley: Is It Okay For Surfers To Punch Innocent Sharks?

Another week, another epside of me surf podcast with me mate Danny Johnson. What do Kaipo, Dennis Rodman and Tupac have in common? Who called Danny (the Weak Wrap guy) out for hating on foil-surfing? And can you name any Australian Open winners now that it’s over? All that, the new Globe movie, the third act of Taj Burrow, and so much less in the weekly surf podcast quiz, The Dooley.

8. Koa Smith Is Naked In France

Hawaiian Mike Hynson prototype, Koa Smith is not one adverse to the odd funny surf stunt. Earlier this year he took a fidget spinner out at Skeleton Bay Namibia and filmed himseld spinning the dumb thing in a barrel most of us can only dream about threading. This week he surfed in France in the nude. What do you think? Have you surfed naked? I have a friend who has. I just wonder where it goes when you're paddling, duckdiving, getting knocked around while you're prone. I shall ask my friend.

9. A South African Session To Salivate Over

It doesn't matter how derivative it is, putting Joy Division on surf clips works. It especially works when the clips are of beautiful conditions being surfed very well. Like right here in this edit of an exceptional South African swell featuring locals Gavin Roberts, John McCarthy, Davey Van Zyl and a fella named Mook Lion. Mook Lion?! Is that the best name of all time? Mook Lion! I think it is.

10. Sweet Vid On Female Big Wave Surfing From The Atlantic

The Atlantic is one of America’s longest running magazines and a leading one for cultural and political comment today. This week they released this really cool animated video featuring big wave surfer Bianca Valenti, whom finished fourth in the Women’s Pe’ahi Challenge last month. The San Franciscan does a great job of speaking about the female perspective for big wave surfing to a non-surfing audience, but also provides a voice we don’t make an effort to hear enough from in our own tight culture. Very good.

This Week In Not Surfing

It’s the mad bruzzies Hockey Dad, from Windang on the NSW South Coast. This week Hockey Dad dropped their new single "Homely Feeling" and its accompanying video. It's the first single from their second album, which will be out in early 2018. Click in to their 90s grunge-pop vibes.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
