Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was December 8, 2017

Wow. What a week. So many things. Too many things to put in a list even. In the time since the last This Week In Surfing, Steph Gilmore won Honolua Bay and finished second in the world (to the champ Tyler Wright), Barney Miller and Matt Formston won gold at the ISA adaptive world surfing champs, both Billabong and Quiksilver released bizarre movie trailer style campaigns for thier summer range, PIPE STARTS TOMORROW, and the Surfer Awards happened last night, but the less said about the hot mess that farce has become the better. Here are ten other, completely ridiculous, completely brilliant things from surfing this past week.

1. The official trailer for Tim Winton's Breath is here

Finally we've been given a looksy at the film adaptation of the award winning Tim Winton novel, Breath. The book has heavy surfing themes and is one of the best literary depictions of our cuture ever, so it's exciting to finally see some moving images from the Simon Baker's directorial debut. It's cool to note that one of the lead kids is hotshot junior pro Samson COulter and that a lot of the water cinematography was done by noted surf filmographer Rick Rifici. It's also worth noting that Gerard Lee co-wrote the screenplay, and he's a fella who wrote Top of the Lake – a tv series that has been nominated for every award under the sun. It's looking pretty bloody good, right?

2. Wade Carmichael qualified for the CT and people are reallly stoked for him

Hell freaking yeah! Wade Carmichael, the Central Coast powerhouse, made the final of the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset this week. He didn't win, Griffin Colapinto did, but in terms of getting onto the CT next year that matters not. Carmichael will be a CT rookie in 2018 and Australian surfing couldn't be more stoked for the guy. Good onya Wade!

3, Harry Bryant feels like a mate

I’ve never met Harry Bryant, but I feel like we’ve met a million times. I feel like we’ve had a hundred nights of 50 beers and gotten up to all sorts of laughs and hijinks and good times. I feel like on one of those nights I hugged him and said, “You’re a bloody legend Haz!” And I feel like he hugged me back and said, “You too mate!” I feel like he’s one of my best mates. But we’ve never even met. Do you feel like that too? Or is it just me? Anyway, Harry Bryant dropped a clip this week that can only be described as a banger. It’s called Rust 2.0 and you should watch it.

4. Al Knost surfed the Kelly Slater Wave Pool better than anyone

Out of the nowhere that so many things seem to suddenly appear comes this footage of the grooviest mid-length aficionado, Mr Alex Knost, riding the Kelly Slater Wave Pool like nobody else has before them. Those cheater 5s! Is this the best surfing that’s ever been done at the surf ranch? Better than Gabby and Filipe and Steph and Mick? Well, surfing and style are subjective and can never really be officially broken down like that… except in this instance, because the answer is yes! Yes, this is the best wave pool surfing of all time. Thank you Mr. Knost! I forgive you for that super awkward phone interview we did back in 2012.

5. Occy interviewed Iggy Pop

No matter how we look back on this year, how many bad things happened, how shit the year seemed to be for any number of reasons, we can remember that 2017 was the year Mark Occhilupo sat down with Iggy Pop for an interview on his podcast, and thus it was the greatest year since the Gregorian calander was invented. Easy.

6. Sheldon Simkus goes to Indo, gets really barrelled

Northern Beaches grommie (who might not be a grommie anymore? How old is he? 19?) Sheldon Simkus is a very good and slightly underrated surfer. Recently he went to Indonesia, banked a bunch of footage, and then had it put together in this ripper of an edit. If you like Into barrels, you’ll like this.

7. Alana and Jack had a baby boy

OMG! Surfing super couple Alana Blanchard and Jack Freestone combined their beautiful and talented genetics and had a baby this week. Banks Harvey Freestone is the kid's name, expect to see that name on modelling campaigns or surfing trophies or both in a 17 years time. Congratulations to Alana and Jack. To celebrate we've dug up this video from the night the child may or may not have been conceived. Enjoy.

8. This is the best surf animation you'll see in forever

Is Nanda Ormond’s surfing’s best artist? Well art is subjective so who can really say, except for me when I again say, “Yes!” Yes, Nanda is surfing’s best artist. Would you take a look at this analogue style animation he put together for Rhythm’s Australiana collection? It’s amazing. It also has some surfing by Asher Pacey, who is also pretty good.

9. Chippa's on the Epokhe team

If you didn't see the new Kai Neville Epokhe surf film released for free last week, you mightn't know that Cabarita's finest goofy footer, Christopher Chippa Wilson, has joined the sharpest freesurfing team in the game with Epokhe. This is his welcome to the team clip and it's one minute of straight Chippa Wilson fire. Shit is he surfing well at the moment. Fun fact: one of these airs was on the cover of Surfing World not so long ago.

10. Watch someoone paddle out through bombing Off The Wall for $500

Don’t you just love this kind of lay-day tomfoolery? At the Rip Curl house on a true victory at sea North Shore day, Gabriel Medina and friends pooled together $500USD to give to Leondro Usana if he could paddle straight out through the deathly close-outs at Off The Wall. Not only was he rewarded with a sweet 500, but he also scored a hell Pipeline pit for his troubles on the way in. So sick!

Bonus... All the surf podcasts you can poke an earphone at!

It's one of those weeks where all the best surf podcasts in Aus have released killer episodes, making your drives down the coast, or waiting in line for christmas presents at various Westfields an absolute pleasure.

Kings of the game, Ain't That Swell deliver a long awaited John John v Gabriel at Pipe preview, alongside some aquapoo talk and more. Big time language warning for these ones.

Danny and I on The Dooley throw the quizmaster duties to the listeners, reading nothing but sent in questions for the weekly surf quiz, discovering along the way that the Central Coast is now the leading competitive surfing powerhouse in Australia.

And then Lipped sit down with Rip Curl boss hog Neil Ridgeway to dicuss the history of the legendary Search Championship Tour events. BRING EM BACK!

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
