COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING

Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was December 29, 2017

Do you feel weird? It feels weird doesn't it? A week between Christmas and 2018 and we're all sitting around not doing anything. Staring idly into space in the breaks around playing with our Christmas presents, waiting for the fireworks and 2018 to get moving. You know what never stops moving though? The ocean. The ocean doesn't stop for this weird week, which means that there is surfing, which means there is a This Week In Surfing. Last year durfing this week I did a video piece on the top ten things of the year. It took ages and my face got really hot. So I'm not doing that again. Instead, ten things from this week!

1. Quiksilver's Hawaii Clip Is A Banger

Starring Jeremy Flores, Mikey Wright, Kanoa Igarashi, Zeke Lau, Connor O’Leary, Mikey February, and a bunch of other dudes, Quikky wraps up 2017 with a hard banging Hawaii clip that leaves you with the same feelings as the last song at a beer sticky punk show. I’m not sure if it’s the second coffee I just downed on this Friday afternoon, but I’m all about the energy of this clip. Rarrrrrrr! Even at a long seven minutes, rarrrrr!

2. Dane Surfs a Bonzer

Hey look, it’s Dane Reynolds. You remember Dane Reynolds, he finished fourth in the world one year and then quit and remained one of the world’s most popular and influential surfers. Would you like to see him surf a Campbell Brothers Bonzer shape? You would? Well that’s convenient because right here we have a neat edit of him watching one being shaped and then ripping on it. It’s simple. It’s nice.

3. Mason Ho Says Merry Christmas

At the end of the year it’s always nice to reflect on our lives and assess the things we’re thankful for appearing in our lives. At the end of 2017, as the seconds count down, I’m going to look at the stars and meditate on how lucky we are to have the surfing of Mason Ho in this world. Can you imagine a world without the surfing of Mason Ho? It makes you shudder, doesn’t it?

4. Highlight Surfing From Rip Curl's Hawaii House

Rip Curl, like many of the big surfing brands, has a house on the North Shore of Oahu. Come the Hawaiian winter, they fill that house with surfers they employ. So this is the highlight clip of those surfers’s surfing from the past eight weeks, including Matt Wilkinson, Mick Fanning, Leandro Osuna’s paddle out bet, Gabriel Medina, Griffin Colapinto’s little brother, Parker Coffin’s big brother, Nikki Van Dijk’s younger brother, The Wright siblings sans Mikey, and more. There’s a lot of good surfing involved. Congratulations to everyone.

5. Baby John Is Cute,

In light of John John Florence winning back to back World Titles and pretty well being the most naturally talented surfer and most universally loved surfer of all time, some people have uncovered this old piece on 13 year old John John surfing in his first Pipe Masters. It’s pretty adorable, and a great piece of content that is currently being ruined by creepy comments about John John's mum wherever it is being posted. Can we stop being creeps guys? Did we learn nothing from 2017?

6. Jamie Krups Stars In Weep

“If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis.” Loveable young filmmaker Tyler Bell teams up with Northern Beaches alumni Jamie Krups to put together this wonderful clip of Krups surfing sweaty Indo and onshore Aus. How fun does the wedge look? They should call it that… the wedge. It would be a good name for it.

7. Reef Heazlewood In Reef Tricks Attention Spans

I’ve almost finished my coffee now, guys. And now I have anxiety and I’m not nearly as enthused about writing this last this week in surfing column for the year as I was back at that Quiksilver Hawaii clip. But this Reef Heazlewood guy is pretty good, isn't he? And there is some nice scenery and good use of light throughout his clip. I also appreciate how the five minute edit is broken into four mini clips, tricking my diminishing attention span. I’m pretty concerned with how they’ve abbreviated the word “chapter” though. “Chp”? That’s weird, no? Like, “Chp 3. Man Made.” That doesn’t feel right. Surely it’s “Ch” if not spelt out in full: “Chapter”. Have I missed the point here? Most definitely. Happy New Year everyone!

8. Brad Domke Does Brad Domke Things

Brad Domke is the world’s best and most famous skim boarder. You remember him from surfing Ours and Cyclops and Puerto Escondido and other scary waves on his skimmy shimmy, well here he is doing not that. Here he is doing skateboard style moves. Do you think Brad Domke would win the Kelly Slater Wave Pool event, considering he wouldn’t need to paddle around a line-up? No? Yeah, me neither.

9. Asher Pacey in Iceland with friends

Everyone’s favourite surfer named Asher (take that Asher Wales!), Asher Pacey, went to Iceland recently with the Zion Wetsuit team and surfed a really fun looking right-hander surrounded by snow. It’s just like watching Asher Pacey’s smooth rail to rail surfing on the Gold Coast, only colder. Merry Christmas to everyone in Iceland, and to some people who are not in Iceland. And Merry Christmas to Asher Wales!

10. Involvment School Surfing Plus Mom Def

How sick is Mom Def? How sick was the involvement school of Australian mid-length surfing pioneered by the likes of Bob McTavish and co? How sick was that weird point in time that they intersected? That was this week, actually, in this clip of Californian Devon Howard. P.S. My computer auto-correct “Mos Def” to “Mom Def” and I like it so much that I’m leaving it as is.

This Week In Not Surfing...

Did you know Jarvis Cocker and Iggy Pop recently got together to record a cover of Nick Cave's Red Right Hand? I didn't.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Look after your mates and have a happy new year!
