COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING

Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was January 5, 2018

1. John John just wants to get better

It’s been a quiet week around the world of surfing this week. Really quiet. So much so that the number one thing to check out is the WSL recycling some footage of John John’s year edited to some soundbites from an interview they did before Christmas. But it works. It’s John John talking, which is great, over John John surfing, which is even more great. And that footage of John at Margarets? Primo! He just wants to get better at surfing. Imagine being as good as John John and wanting to be even better, it's kind of greedy, no? Save some talent for the rest of us, John.

2. The World Junior Championships are happening right now

In Kiama on the south coast of NSW the world's best surfers that aren't allowed to vote or drink or drive or do lots of other things are going at it for the 2017 World Junior Title... and we're all for the World Junior Title, it's fun and exciting and fresh feeling, I love it... but do we have to drag 2017 with us into 2018. Can't we just call this the 2018 World Junior Title and skip 2017? Better yet, let's call it the 2019, no, 2020 World Junior Title. Get way ahead of ourselves like an issue of Vogue.

I went to watch the World Juniors once. It was when it was back at Narrabeen. And in the comp was Owen Wright, Jadson Andre, and a very young Gabriel Medina. Do you know wich of them won the comp? NONE... it was Maxime Huscenot who did. Yesssss, World Juniors!

3. The beautiful surf imagery of Owen Milne's showreel

This is how you do it... if you're a surf cinematographer and you want people to see your shit, release it in the first week of January, when nothing is happening, no-one is making content, yet the surf sites are getting bigger audience numbers than usual because no-one is working and everyone wants to check the forecast. Filmmaker Owen Milne shows us all the beautiful places in the world he's been to capture moving images of surfing, and also manages to sneak a shot of his girlfriend in there. It's lovely.

4. Chippa Wilson stars in the very chilly B-Wolf

Pete Devries’s new movie is called Seawolf and it looks great (I’m yet to see it), but they’re starting to release some of the clips that didn’t make the final edit in a series that are calling B-Wolf, which is a great pun. This one features Chippa Wilson visiting Devries in Canada. Brrrrr. A very good Joy Division (just before they were called Joy Division) track too.

5. The Dooley podcast want a Seabass movie

I'm gonna throw my podcast here cause I can, I know it’s lame to self-promote, but this is 2018 and I am kind of a millennial so it is my duty to shamelessly self-promote, right? This week on The Dooley, Danny and I discuss wealthy surfers, how to save a surfer bleeding to death from a shark bite, and how great a movie based on Seabass’s life would be. You should listen to it the next time you cook yourself a delicious pasta.

6. Keanu Asing can be our new cult hero

At the end of 2017, Keanu Asing qualified for the Championship Tour for the second time in his career. That’s a pretty remarkable feat that requires a whole lot of grit. And he did it with barely a second of hype or celebration. Hey, anyone else out there want to jump on the Asing train for 2018 and make him a cult fave? Toot toot.

7. Jai Walsh gets his stickers

The young South Coaster joins the team at Afends. This is his welcome to the team clip, it’s kind of spooky. Spooky or not, he is ripping.

8. Chelsea Tuach in El Salvador

The former CT surfer from Barbados went to El Salvador this week and surfs pretty well in the warm Central American waters. Do you guys know how many more clicks this article would have gotten if I'd used a bikini screenshot from this clip as the hero image, instead of that cold dumb shot of a slurpee wave up there. I'd have at least 200% more clicks. So many more clicks! And I'd have done my job so much better. Life is so much easier on the Internet for garbage peoples, isn't it? The finner at 0.35 is very good.

9. Some land-locked logging at a river wave

This is my old local. It's in Montreal. Now my local is in Mentone and it's not even better. It's so cold in Montreal right now, though, that windows are breaking. So cold that windows are just breaking! Can you believe that? I'll take Mentone. It has a La Porchetta.

10. Let's check in on Instagram because nothing else is going on...

So really, there is not a whole lot going on. Let's go to Intagram and check in on a couple of people and say hi.

First up, let's see where Jordy Smith is.

Oh, he's in London. Look natural Jordy, look natural.

Our CT rookie for this year is reflecting on his 2017 and is stoked about that. Good onya, Wade, we're stoked too!

Best year of my life!! Let’s keep the good times rolling into 2018 🤘🏼

But he's also getting some pretty fun waves. Hi.

Tyler Wright is being celebrated by her brothers. As she damn well should! Hey Tyler!

@timmaa and @mikeywright1 treat me like the princess I am 😂😂.

It's so freaking cold in parts of North America right now that the waves are freezing as they break. Have a look at these slurpy boys in Nantucket! They're good boys.

And where's John John? Oh, he's headed for the cold too. Have a look at his smooth backflip form! What a freak. G'day John.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Love you, Mike
