Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was January 19, 2018

1. A New Stationary Wave Pool!

It feels as if every week there is some kind of new wave pool development, and yet I've still never even seen one. What a time to be alive. This one is stationary wave design, much like the flowriders of the 90s, only less good. But it does look like a lot of fun while having far less barriers to entry of getting one up and running. My main question is: If you can run this pool anywhere, why are they surfing it in a lake that looks absolutely freezing?

2. Jaws Got Big

The East Coast of Australia wasn't the only place in the world to receive a nifty piece of swell this week, nope, Hawaii got some relatively large waves too. Hawaii and big waves, who'dathought? Here's some footage of Peahi on the island of Maui that features the likes of Kai Lenny and co tackling 40 odd foot of ocean. Also, hey, do you like weird remixes of alt-metal band Linkin Park? You do? Well boy do I have some good news for you.

3. And Some People Ate It

Ah yeah, that's the thing about surfing gigantic scary surf. Sometimes you're gonna get drilled. How good is the relaxed commentary of the filmer?

4. RVCA's North Shore Clip Is A Summer Feeling Good Time

RVCA sure know how to put together a feel good surf clip. This is their highlight edit from December on the North Shore of Oahu and it features the likes of Ford Archbold, Danny Fuller, Makua Rothman, Noa Beschen, Davey Cathels, Bruce Irons and more.

5. Occy and Brad Gerlach

No way. No freaking way. Brad Gerlach graces the Occ-Cast pallet couch for a peak 90s surf podcast of classic awesomeness. They talk about his move to Australia, being world no.1 at one point, big wave surfing and more.

6. A Podcast About The Movie Point Break

Speaking of podcasts, this week on The Dooley, Danny and I watch the 1991 Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze starred classic and then quiz and quote all over it. Utah, get me two.

7. Really Nice Kelly Slater Pool Footage

This footage isn’t from this week, but I hadn’t seen it. It’s from an HBO special, (Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel), and it might be the best footage of the Surf Ranch pool yet. How much better does the wave look when it gets lit up by sunlight?

8. Keanu Asing and Zeke Lau

The WSL have knocked together this neat four minute package about the Hawaiian duo of Keanu Asing and Zeke Lau, who are best buddies and who will be on tour together for the first time this year. Both guys qualified on the QS in 2017, but have a ferocity in their competitive surfing that could do a lot of damage in 2018.

9. Torren Martyn In The Phillipines

Torren Martyn is a beautiful surfer to watch. He’s got the sweetest of styles and rides boards that require him to draw long lines. It’s great. And this clip captures all that, as well as that lovely feeling of surfing nice waves when it starts pouring rain. Don’t you love those sessions? I do.

10. Unsponsored Grom Who Rips

His name is Jed Fasso, he's from the North Coast of NSW and he rips. He also plays in the band that soundtrack this clip, Dogfight. If you have lots and lots of money, or are in charge of a company who does, you should give it to him.

Hey, if you're a grom who shreds and has a "Sponsor Me" clip sitting on your hard-drive, send it to me (mikewiiliamjennings@gmail.com) and I'll feature it here on This Week In Surfing every week. Why not?

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
