Rasta's Wonderful Alternative Boards (Shredding!), Plus Fanning Skims Kelly's Pool, and Meola's Ridiculous Air Clip
COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING
Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was January 26, 2018
G'day everybody. I drove from Byron Bay to Melbourne yesterday in one go and now I can't see straight, so this This Week In Surfing will be brief on thr writing, and possibly a little weird and have zero commentary on Facebook owning the broadcast rights to the WSL CT this year because I have no idea what that means yet and I thought that happened last year? Anyway, here are the ten things:
1. Jack Freestone In Europe
Here goes new dad Jack Freestone shredding in Portugal, France and Spain. Geeze he rips. How on earth does a surfer this good fall off the CT? How does that happen? Another interesting thing to note about this clip is how lovely that rainbow paddle pop board looks. I am tired.
2. Quivered With Rasta
The surfing of David Rastovich X the surfboards of Gary McNeil / the filming and editing of Nathan Oldfield = I am watching this clip, thanks very much. I am tired.
3. Matt Meola Did A Crazy Aerial and Killed Some Fish
This is getting ridiculous, there are about 50 airs in here that would be the closing manouevre of 50 other world class surfers' clips. Meola closes his with some good time fishing instead. And how good is the soundtrack? The hit track “American Indie Rock and Roll 2” by hot new band Sweet Wave Audio. I am tired.
4. Mick Fanning Skims The Wave Pool
Here's some footage of Mick Fanning riding Kalani Robb's skimboard at Kelly Slater's magical backyard wave pool. It'll be interesting to see what kinds of boards people will end up riding when there is no real line-up to be navigated by paddling around. It'll also be interesting when the next Star Wars movie comes out. The Han Solo one. Ron Howard is directing it. I am tired.
5. Kerby Brown Surfs Waves a Lot of Us Wouldn't
Bloody heck WA is a beautiful place. And gee, Parkway Drive are pretty loud too, aren't they? I am tired.
6. Someone Take Me To El Salvador
I have no idea who Steve Pittman is, apart from being the surfer in this clip. But doesn’t he make you want to go to El Salvador and surfed these lovely turquoise rights? I am tired.
7. John John’s Interesting Breathing Technique
This is the Wim How breathing method, and it should be done with the supervision of an expert the first time, and never alone. “It’s a great way to stay calm, centred and focused,” says John John.
“I’ve got the breathing thing down, but I'd appreciate a video about how to walk. I think it goes something like.... put one foot in front of the other. Thanks, Hurley,” says a random YouTube commenter. (I am tired.)
8. Some Yago Dora Hype
The young Brazillian star gets some WSL mini-mini-mini doc treatment prior to his rookie season. He is not tired.
9. Rip Curl Made An Ad About Rip Curl
I spose they are pretty good, huh. Makes sense. They're probably not tired.
10. Italo Ferreira On The North Shore
Really feels like anything could happen with Italo this year. Could become a full on World Title contender. Could get a run of bad luck and see himself fighting for his spot in 2019. Could possibly start a Nintendo video game soundtrack cover band. Who knows? These are his 9 best freesurfed waves in Hawaii this past winter. How good would a nap be right now?
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Don't drive from Byron to Melbourne in one go. It is silly.
