Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was March 30, 2018

1. Cyclone Marcus Littered West Aus With Waves

Not since Cyclone Bianca in 2011 have some of West Aus's more fickle breaks turned on like this, parts of the coast turned into mile long point breaks, churning down the beach and creating a wild spectacle. For more of a good time, check out our full round up of photos and Instagrams that lit up the Internet on Monday. Not included there was this whip in with pace that tube wrangling phenom Jack Robinson nailed. Look at the speed...

2. Bells Didn't Start Yet

The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, which for 2018 might as well be renamed to The Rip Curl Festival of Mick Fanning, clicked over and into the event window on Wednesday following a really good day of waves on Tuesday. As happens sometimes, none of that pre-event swell stuck around, and the event had to kick off with the stutter start of two successive lay-days. A start to bigger crowds of a full-on Easter weekend is no huge shame though.

Here's what it looked like on Tuesday:

3. Seabass Ripped Bells Early

Is this why everyone has him in their Fantasy teams? Sebastien Zietz got to Bells early and got to work, and gee he does look pretty bloody good out there. Starting to get the vibe that this year’s Bells event is going to be all about aerials. Also, don't you love how TV On the Radio is still getting flogged on surf clips. Remember back in 2009 when "Wolf Like Me" was on every single clip that got released, ever? It was a good time. How weird is this fact though? That song came out on an album that was released over 12 years ago. Feeling old? I am. And my back hurts for no reason. What's that about?

4. Jay Davies Soft-Top Shredding The West

A big hard man on a small soft board, heavy waves met with a light approach. This Catch Surf clip is an edit of surf contradictions. It also features a French song called "Pourquoi Pas" which means "Why Not" and it's by an artist called Miel de Montagne, which is very similar to Mimi LaMontagne, who works for Rip Curl. And it was filmed by Tom Jennings, who has the same surname as me. None of this means anything.

5. Mick's Sticker

Did you know that Mick Fanning runs with a black Rip Curl sticker on his board's nose, where the rest of the team has to run with red? I didn't know that. Well, in honour of the great man the whole Rip Curl team will also be running with the black sticker this event.

Is that interesting? It's not that interesting, is it? It's Mick though. And we can never not have enough Mick.

Hey, just a thought, if you were surfing in this event against Mick Fanning, and you met him in Round 3 or something, would you feel the extra motivation to beat him and claim your spot in history as the last one to surf a heat with Fanning? Get on the news that night and all that? Or would you be less motivated due to the fact you wouldn't want to end Mick's run at a fairytale ending, winning Bells one final time?

I'd 100% be trying to make myself a part of history and knocking him out of the comp. But I'm an arsehole, just ask the commenters from last week's This Week In Surfing.

6. Jordy Jumped Into A Bin

For a good cause. It's called Let's Talk Trash, and the general premise of the stunt is that if Jordy Smith can do an aerial into a giant bin, then the rest of us can put our rubbin in bins too. Short, simple idea. Alright. The clip is made by one of those YoutTube vlogger/also a director guys who go too hard on the editing and the to-the-camera-tell-you-about-the-clip-I-want-to-make-while-you're-actually-watching-the-clip styles, but it's still pretty fun.

7. Speaking of Jordy, How About This Sick Jeep Activation

No! Way! Another 360 degree video activation thing. Maybe this time it’ll take off. If you’ve got the YouTube app on your phone, watch it on that. It’s ahh okay.

8. Coco Ho Documentary

The good and creative folk at Volcom put together this sweet 13 minute doco on their teamrider Coco Ho, and her extraordinary family and their deep ties to their native Hawaii. It's a really lovely watch. And she's ripping! Jump in.

9. Rage 2 Trailer

The little grip-pad company that could, owned by Skeggs guitarist/surf filmmaker Toby Cregan and surfers Noa Deane, Creed McTaggart, Beau Foster and Ellis Ericson (I think) are making another movie. And this is its trailer. Book me in, 'cause any movie that might feature those four surfers is going to be an absolute ripper.

10. The Kai Otton Story (Told By Mick, Parko and Taj) is Gold!

This video actually came out a couple of weeks ago as a StabMag and Reef collaboration, but it's so good that we have to re-share it now that it's been released to YouTube. God bless Kai Otton. How we miss watching him on the CT.

This Week's Classic Surf Music Memory

This Week In Surfing's Classic Surf Music Memory is brought to you by Summer Bright Lager

Would you have a look at this unbelievable pop music bodyboarding themed video from 1991. It is an absolute corker, and no matter how many times you’ve seen it, it still delivers a good time. It’s so good that Sniper Bodyboards, out of Europe, even did a tribute reproduction clip of it back in 2014. Give it a Google. It’s great.

Apparently the main fella in the clip is Brett Young, a Cronulla local and bodyboarding champion who sadly passed away a couple of years ago in a car crash. He a couple of other guys and a local crew known as the Skid Kids are responsible for pioneering waves like Shark Island. I just watched a trailer to a dock made about it all called Holding On that looks amazing.

Check out Summer Bright's Lager's Summer Sessions Music Tour this summer, where unfortunately a crew of 90s-era bodyboarders won't be playing, but Alex Lahey will.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Go Mick!
