Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was April 13, 2018

1. Margies Starts Today

Oooh, spooky, it's Friday the 13th. Oooooh. Also, the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro's event window opened on Wednesday to the awesome news that it would be on hold for two days, with an almost definite chance it would start on Friday, today, at North Point.

In that time the world's best competitive surfers have been touring wineries, playing AFL with schoolkids and visiting Rottnest Island and its local crew of quokkas. Also in that time it's been revealed that Caio Ibelli has broken his foot, and so local wildcard trialist runners up Jack Robinson and Jerome Forrest will face off in a sudden death heat to determine who gets that last spot in the comp (young gun Kael Walsh won it outright a couple of days ago).

Below is a little clip of what John John has been up to in the days leading up to now. Sharky, spooky, oooooh.

2. R.I.P. Willy Morris

"California's answer to Richard Cram", as Surfer called him, has sadly passed away this week. Morris was something of an underground legend/surf media darling around the Cali scene in the 80s, and was well known for his powerful surfing as well as smoking Tom Curren, Mark Richards and Michael Ho in 1985 in a comp known as the Katin Challenge.

We'll throw it over to Shaun Tomson, who wrote a lovely tribute to Morris in the comments of the Surfer Magazine obit (note: The comment is unverified, but I have reason to believe it is legitmately the great Shaun Tomson)

"Al Merrick phoned me yesterday with the news about Willy's death - we were both broken.

We spent a lot of time together in the '80s and Willy was a great guy to be around - big carving lines in any size surf, big smile and bigger heart. Willy loved his Sony walkman and always had the hottest sounds. He was the first guy to show the world what a quad can do under his powerful feet and he seriously ripped. Every time I saw Willy after his pro career was over he had that sunshine smile like he had just been on a trip on his boat to one of the Santa Barbara islands he loved. The surf world will miss him deeply. To family and friends - our love and deepest condolences and prayers. Willy will always be in our hearts.

With love and sadeness - Shaun and Carla"

3. Mick Fanning's Life In Cartoon Form

Did you happen to catch this piece put together by the people at Red Bull? It's a wonderfully succinct timeline of Mick's entire eventful and incredible life. What a legend he is. A giant amongst us.

4. The Last Week of Mick's Comp Life

Also, did you catch this Rip Curl clip from the final 7 days around Mick's last stand at the Rip Curl Pro? It's very good too.

5. That Mick Fanning x Joel Parkinson Conversation

Alright, last one, last Mick thing for the week. I know we've all seen enough, but this taped conversation between best mates and epic rivals that Surfing World set up for their landmark Mick Fanning issue is the primo-est of primo surf content getting around at the moment.

6. Behold, The Greatest Selfie In Professional Surfing History

Remember up top when I mentioned that a bunch of surfers hung out with some quokkas? Well, here's Sally Fitz, Nikki Van Dijk, Coco Ho and Stephanie Gilmore (and the WSL's Maya Bengston) getting the greatest selfie of all time with one. it's over everyone. Cute selfies are over. They clocked the game. We can all go home now.

7. Occ-Cast With The Brazillian Storm

Unofficial National Living Treasure Mark Occhilupo got a cluster of the world's best Brazillian surfers during the North Shore winter and recored an episode of his Occ-Cast. The ep came out this week and... and... just... god bless Jadson Andre. God bless him forever!

8. This Is Who Jerome Forrest Is

If you were wondering who the guy surfing in the sudden death heat with Jack Robinson for the final spot in the comp, this is he. Jerome Forrest just happened to release a clip this week too, and it's sick!

9. A Fresh Laurie Towner Clip?!

Yes, a fresh Laurie Towner clip! Put together for Need Essentials, it’s a really beautiful look into the humble everyday life of one of our best underground and most versatile surfers, as well as their blessed hometown. Oh, and of course he's ripping too.

10. A new Dooley Podcast Episode

Post Bells and Pre-Margs The Dooley asks: How many events did Mick Fanning surf in his career? (Lots) Did Italo Ferreira destroy a portaloo at Bells? (Kinda) Do Men’s Rights Activists have a case against women’s surfing? (No!) And have we solved the shark problem? (Pfft) All this and so much less in the series return of the weekly surf podcast quiz that is the Dooley.

This Week's Classic Surf Music Memory

This Week In Surfing's Classic Surf Music Memory is brought to you by Summer Bright Lager

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine a moment where one of Australia's best and most popular young bands of the moment dedicated one of their music videos to the old boys a small baordriders club on the south coast of NSW, somewhere like Windang. Now open your eyes, and imagine no more, cause this is a thing that that happened back when lords Hockey Dad released the clip for their 2016 single, and then made their video at a local boardriders comp. The clip now has over 200,000 views. That's more than double your average Filipe Toledo clip. And the old dogs are ripping! Such a classic.

Check out Summer Bright's Lager's Summer Sessions Music Tour this summer, where unfortunately the old boys of the Windang Boardriders Club won't be playing, but Alex Lahey will.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Go Raptors!
