Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was April 27, 2018

1. Another new Andy Irons doco trailer

The most anticipated film in surfing right now, possibly ever(?), is Andy Irons: Kissed By God, the high profile Andy Irons documentary produced by Teton Gravity. This week we got another trailer which reveals that the movie will somewhat deal with America’s prescription drug epidemic, as well as alluding to a possible bi-polar disorder tragically suffered by the iconic three-time World Champ. The film premieres in LA on May 2 followed by special Hawaiian and New York screenings. We’re not sure when it will reach Australia, but when it does it looks to be some heavy, profound, solemn viewing.

2. Four Three Minutes of John John

Note to self: Must listen to more Ty Segall. Must watch more John John Florence clips. Must go surfing more. Must watch John John Florence clips soundtracked by classic Ty Segall tracks while putting on my wetsuit, fired up to get out there. This here is a highlight reel of the world’s best surfer, getting around home last Hawaiian winter. Enjoy.

P.S. This clip goes for three minutes and 49 seconds, and the credits for it start at the two minute and 55 second mark. Surf clips under 12 minutes do not need credits at all. And they certainly don't need credits that go for nearly a quarter of the clip. This is not being watched on a big screen, so just put your name small in the opening somewhere if you have to and chuck the rest of the creds in the liner notes. Done. Enough, already.

3. Italo Ferreira's tattoo is all-time

Following in the rad footsteps of one Silvana Lima, Italo Ferreira celebrated his Bells win by getting the Bells trophy, and a koala, tattooed on his bicep. And American fans don't think Bells matters? Look how much it matters! No-one is getting the Quik Pro France, the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the Quik Pro Gold Coast, Trestles, Tahiti... name them all, no-one is getting any other surfing trophy tattooed to their skin (Pipe Masters excepted). Bells rules. Always and forever!

4. Red Bull's Mad Wax Re-Boot

A neat little project from Red Bull starring Leo Fioravanti, Caroline Marks and Kanoa Igarashi rebooting the brilliant Mad Wax concept starring Ross Clarke Jones. Has there ever been a better premise for a surf fantasy than magical wax? If so I'm yet to hear it.

5. The Founders Cup Teaser

Hey, did you remember that before the next major CT event the first ever ticketed, stadium seated wave pool teams event (so many firsts in there) is on next weekend! It goes down May 5-6 and who knows what it will be like? We do know that it’s a World Cup style thing with teams from Australia, USA (including Hawaii), Brazil, Europe and World (lol) being represented by the likes of Steph Gilmore, Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Gabriel Medina, John John Florence, Jordy Smith and heaps more. When you think of it that way, the nothing but superstars way, it’ll have to be pretty sick.

6. Kelly Slater On Some Boards

While we're at the surf ranch... Kelly Slater showed us some of the surfboards he owns, the show-off. He's so injured right now, guys. Pray for Kelly.

7. Still At The Ranch, Girffy Colapinty

Speaking of the surf ranch, Griffin Colapinto went there this week (with Conner Coffin) and oh my lord is he good at surfing there. Is it the most impressive performance you've seen in a pool yet? Better than Kieran Perkins winning the 1500m fresstyle from lane eight? Not quite, but could be soon.

8. The Dooley, Episode 55

In this episode of The Dooley Danny and I decide that Ronnie Blakey would be the person on the WSL team you would want to marry, while Joe Turpel would be a great deal of fun to go on a roadtrip with, and Pete Mel is the guy you'd tackle a weekend project with. Heaps of other things in there too, but that stuff is the most important.

9. Meet Isabella Nichols

Australia has some top notch talent graduating out of junior women's surfing and getting ready to take on the big leagues at the moment. There's Macy Callaghan, Kobie Enright, and then there's Isabella Nichols of Coolum, Queensland. 20 yuears old, 16th on the QS right now and one worth keeping an eye on for the future.

10. TC and Hector Stamaria In Japan

Two time world surfing champion Mr. Tom Carroll, and champion of a having a fun time surfing, Mr. Hector Santamaria, recently went swell chasing in Japan through typhoon season for Eye Symmetry Surfboards. Surfing starts at the 1.44 mark and boy is it good. Classic TC making classic TC lines with classic TC sprays. And then Santamaria bringing the loopy hi-fi fun. My pal Danny Johnson made an observation to me once while we were watching Nix Nic Nooley. “Buddy surf sections are the best,” he said. The sentiment rings true here.

Bonus...

Did you know that out there in the world somewhere (Toronto) there is an all-girl surf band called The Surfragettes? For the pun alone, they get five stars! Here they are doing a cover of "Toxic" by Britney Spears.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
