Six Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was July 20, 2018

1. Jack Robinson Wins Rip Curl Cup At Padang Padang

With a significant swell lighting up the charts, the Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang in Bali got to showcase the barrel-riding specialty event it is in all its glory and, in doing so, Jack Robinson once again got to prove what a special talent he can be when good waves get good, winning the thing against some of the world’s best tube fiends. Now, if only the QS was run in nothing but sick tubes. Perfect or imperfect, easy or difficult, Jack Robbo would be a force. Unfortunately for us and him, that’s not going to happen.

2. Steph Won J-Bay, Is World No.1!

Not really this week, but kinda this week, Steph Gilmore took out the first Women's J-Bay event in 18 years in an amazing World Title race clash between herself and Lakey Peterson, where the winner would leave the water with the World No.1 spot and the yellow jersey. Steph got it in classic Steph fashion, with long railed beautiful surfing that seemingly only Steph can do, and in no better spot than one of the most iconic righthand pointbreaks in the world. And she did it at the right time, in the final, while Lakey Peterson had been surfing the house down all event and looked much more to be the form surfer out there. And how about that for Lakey Peterson? Imagine being World No.1, having a ripper event that saw you go all the way to the final, and still you come away in a worse position than when you started it? It's worth throwing your hands up in the sky and asking, "What have you got to do to win a World Title in this game?"

"Do you really need seven?" Lakey joked to Steph during their trophy presentations, referencing Steph's persuit of a record-equaling seventh World Title. It was a signifcant event for both surfers, a significant heat between them, and significant quote about what is playing out in their story. At year's end, when this best World Title race in years is finished, this might be the moment that defined it. "Do you really need seven?"

3. Vicco Was Pumping Yesterday

Speaking of swell, the Victorian coasts copped a bunch of it yesterday, in perfect time for the 50 Year Storm event, which was all but ready to go, except unfortunately it just didn’t quite get there by a smidge. It was no Bells 81, but there were some pretty good waves rolling through the iconic spot anyway.

4. Asher Pacey In Iceland

This is being heralded as the most beautiful surf film of the year by some. It stars Asher Pacey. It is set in Iceland. It features an original score. And I can't think of a surf movie to counter the claim that this is the most beautiful of the year, so, why not? It has a 20 minute runtime, so best click full screen and get comfortable.

5. Billabong Girls Ripping Ripping Ripping

Ignore the weird FHM looking catalogue shot on the cover of this video and just click play because if you do click play you'll see a whole bunch of A-Grade shredding from Macy Callaghan, Laura Enever, Alessa Quizon and Felicity Palmateer on Maui and Oahu's North Shore. It's a really good surf clip with sweet editing and a sick track over the top, and it's 99% surfing over the 1% of modelling. Be cool if the cover shot reflected that, but I spose the thunbnail'll help the play count on YouTube.

6. The Australian Team Training In A Wave Pool, Surfing's Turning Into A "Sport" Sport Before Our Eyes

Here is a clip showing the Australian surf team hitting the Kelly Slater Wave Pool as a training camp for the coming 2020 Olympic Games. A lot of criticism has gotten thrown around about this, given that the Olympics will be run in the ocean, not a pool. But it actually makes heaps of sense from a coaching and training perspective. Read Nick Carroll’s piece about it. Interesting times.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
