Eight Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was August 24, 2018

1. Gabriel Medina Wins Tahiti, Coming For The Title

Hey, here's a fun fact. Here are the beaches of the last three Prime Ministers of Australia: Manly, Bondi and now Cronulla. Isn't that fun? So much fun. I am having so much fun. Fun fun fun. Hooray for fun. Sydney's surf communities are the most powerful voting public in the country. Go... us?

What else was fun this week was Gabriel Medina's winning of the Tahiti Pro. He and new Aus PM are both devout christians, but that's where the similarities end. I think. I haven't seen ScoMo take on ledging lefthand reef breaks, but that doen't prove it to be absolutely true.

Anyway, Medina beat Owen Wright in the final, in a last minute two wave set shuffle that saw him get the score he needed to win the Chopes trophy for a second time. The win sees Medina leapfrog Julian Wilson and take third place in the rankings, and gives him enough momentum to quite seriously challenge Filipe Toledo for the World Title.

When you look at the events left on schedule (Surf Ranch, France, Portugal and Pipe), Medina has a great record.

Even the wildcard event of the Surf Ranch Pro, the pool comp, he won the behind closed doors test event the WSL ran there last year. So you have to like his chances.

On a sidenote, have you looked at the rankings lately? Wade Carmichael (WADE CARMICHAEL!) is in the top 5! The rookie underdog is having a stellar year, and the Teahupo'o result will probably sew up his spot on the CT next year. Good onya Wade ya freaking legend!

2. Riding A Mattress At The Wedge

This was the most viral surf moment of the week, and for good reason. Surviving any drop at the dirty old wedge is impressive. Surviving it on an inflaitable mattress is downright amazing. Quinn Kasbar is his name, and he is my hero. No word yet whether or not the WSL will start a Mattress Tour to their growing number of comp divisions, but you'd have to say it's a fait accompli that they will.

3. Vale LA Bob

Sad news out of the Northern Beaches of Sydney this week when a local legend of the Avalon surf community drowned after getting his leggie hooked on the reef at his favourite surf spot. Bob Bevern was known and loved for living in his van above that spot and dedicating his life to surfing it. He even shaped his own boards specifically to surf it. Last year he was the subject of a beautiful short film by Spencer Frost, and we're so lucky to be able to watch it in tribute to the man at this time. Watch below:

4. O'RIGINALS Part 3 – Dan Johnson

This series from O'Neill has been one of the best going around the last couple of years. And the final of them is a sweet little look into the life of young Dan Johnson, who's starting his own mini-shaping label (Snarly!) and can finless surf like a demon.

5. Mick Surfing Surfing and Talking Board Diversity

Isn't it great that now that Mick Fanning is no longer chasing World Titles, he can jump on fun boards and experiment with different shapes. That's what this clip is about, and it ties in with the surf Start-Up AwayCo, which is a top idea that allows surfers to borrow surfboards from surf shops, wherever they are. Like a Netflix for boards. Genius. Problem for Mick is he has to sticker them up every time.

6. Ain't That Swell's New Episode

Shredheads, waxheads, kooks and barneys... the latest episode of Ain't That Swell sees Jed and Vaughan joined by Vaughan's WSL commentating brother Ronnie and their dad Alfie, who is the biggest legend in the history of legendary legends being legends. Also on the poddy is Danny Johnson, who's nickname of Wet Lettuce is really damaging his personal brand at the moment. Back when Danny and I were doing our own podcast on a regular weekly basis I tried to combat that by nicknaming him the strongest man in surf podcasting, but Danny wasn't into it... Oh to have that time back, we could have saved him. And the thing is, he's not even wet lettucey at all. He's tough as nails he is. But now it's so far along that it can't come back. Wet lettuce Johnson. Poor fella. Anyway, it's a quality episode of a the best podcast we have in the surf world. Give it a listen.

7. Sebastien Ziets In The Ments

I'm never upset to Seabass. Never ever. How could you be. Even the title of his series of clips makes me joyful. "Happily Stoked." Is there a better name out there in surfing, for anything? I don't think so. This clip also features: Gavin Gilette, Tyler Newton, Danny Fuller, Evan Valiere, Sam Martin, Seqouia Hennesy, Ryder Guest, Teva Dexter, Kyle Galtes and Dylan Goodale..

8. Fanning, Wilko and Conner Coffin In The Maldives

For a Rip Curl boardshort campaign, three of their best fellas had the blessed luck of being sent to the Maldives to rip apart the inviting warm waves of its atolls. Soooooooo jealous right now.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.

P.S. A Live QS at Nias?

Did you know that there is a QS1000 at the epic Indonesian righthander of Nias? I didn't but here it is. If it's on, it'll be streaming from the Youtube below.
