Did Yago Just Nail the Best Wave Pool Performance of All Time? Plus, New Chinese Wave Pools and an Enlightening Julian Wilson World Title Doco
COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING
Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was February 1, 2019
1. Mase and Yago's Pool Session Is Sick
This week, as if feeling the vibe that there hasn’t been a heap of interesting wave pool content lately, …Lost Surfboards took Mason Ho, Yago Dora and Michael Rodrigues to the Waco pool and Yago Dora did some spectacular Yago Dora things, that is to say, the guy is amazing. Those tweaked straight airs are something else. Is Waco a more entertaining wave pool than the Kelly Slater pool? Sure, the Kelly pool is a daydream-like viewing experience, but it’s hard to imagine anything being made out of Lemoore being nearly as entertaining as this 8 minute edit of excellence. Especially when you throw in the fun grom beachbreak vibes of the credits. Build one in Aus now!
2. Speaking of Wave Pools... China!
Speaking of wave pools, there is some new video footage of this Chinese wave pool that looks kind of like another wave pool, but far worse? Has anyone seen the new season of Silicon Valley? Where Jian-Yang has a whole bunch of innovative new tech ideas that are basically just “New Reddit’ and “New Facebook” and “New Snapchat”… to introduce to the Chinese market. Well, this reeks of that. “New Kelly Slater Wave Pool Company.” It'll probably make a billion dollars.
3. Julian Wilson's Title Loss Documentary
Here is a very good fly-on-the-wall mini-documentary on Julian Wilson’s tilt for the World Title. Pretty stoked they went and did this, but gee ya gotta feel for Julian and his filmer Jimmy Lees who at one point in the fallout and hearbreak of the title loss, had to stop, look around and ask? “So what should they do with all this footage?” Undoubtedly, this would have been planned with a win in mind, but maybe this is better. Stories about second place getters are often far more interesting. Gay Talese, perhaps the greatest non-fiction creative writer ever (my favourite anyway), was all about that. Unfortunately for Jules, being interesting isn’t as fun as winning.
4. Pipeline Has Been Really Good All January
The Volcom Pipe Pro was meant to start this week, unfortunately it's been too shitty. There's swell though. And there has been swell over the past month. If this video is any indication, January has been a pretty damn sweet month for those hanging around the North Shore in the early weeks of 2019. This clip stars the young Moniz brothers and Benji Brand. It also stars Pipeline, the most iconic wave in the world, doing its thing.
5. Pipeline Has Been Really Good, Take 2
Another good Pipe video. This one features Kelly Slater. Y'heard of that guy? Not a bad surfer, that guy. Keep an eye out for him.
6. Fun Boys Say Hello
Oh look, it’s the Fun Boys! The funnest fun boys doing the fun in the waves and the surf. Creed McTaggart, Wade Goodall and Shaun Manners send a video postcard from the North Coast of NSW, thanks to offbeat filmmaker with an eye for a good time, Harry Triglone.
7. Weird Waves Hits The UK
The best new web series we have in surfing is still rolling along with Dylan Graves and the Vans crew, this week coming to us from the UK. Dylan and friends surf a tidal bore wearing beanies and it’s pretty fun. You’d think that the weirdness of the waves is what makes this series so great, and that is cool, but what is really magic about this series is the sense of adventure it captures. That’s something that the best surf movies in history have always done. A+
8. Conner Coffin and Rincon
Conner and Parker Coffin’s weekly YouTube series hits some really good Rincon. Conner Coffin and a long right point… it’s really all you need. The clip ends with Parker Coffin showing us how he paints his board, which is definitely content. No matter what you say about it, it’s content.
9. This Spoons/Santa Barbara Doco Looks Good
And while we're in that part of the world, how good does this documentary look? Legends, legends everywhere!
10. The Lisa Andersen Doco Is Coming To Aus Very Soon
So many docos at the moment! Did you know that there was a Lisa Andersen one in the works?! Well, you do now. Trouble: The Lisa Andersen Story is finally being released and there'll be a couple of premieres on the East Coast of Aus to come with it.
The first screening of the Australian Premiere schedule for Trouble: The Lisa Andersen Story is a ticketed event that will take plact at The Ritz, Randwick on Wednesday February 20, 7.30pm and will include a Q&A with Lisa Andersen. More information and tickets can be found at Surfing World here.
And the second showing will be a free event at the Byron Bay Surf Festival, at Sunset Cinema on Friday February 22, 8.30pm. More information for that one can be found over at the Byron Bay Surf Festival website.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
