Ten Things From Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was May 31, 2019

1. The Margaret River Pro Is On

What a difference a year makes, huh? Remember last year when the Margaret River Pro was held over 2 months and in two different countries? With the later event window and a million jet skis and boats in the water, and no big media-covered high profile incidents in the region leading into the event, we've hardly heard the word "shark" all week. It's nice, really.

There have been two big, long days held already in the first three days the event has been live, which is solid. Meat and potatoes main-break Margaret River has seen Australia's no.1 Wade Carmichael, veteran legend Ace Buchan and trials winner Jacob willcox tumbling out of the event with 33rds, while Filipe, Jordy and Gabby looked solid in their Round 1 heats. Interestingly, Kelly Slater has top scored the event so far in the perilous elimination round.

On the ladies' side they've pushed through to not quite the end of Round 3, where Caroline Marks has looked most sure-footed so far, with Carissa Moore and Sally Fitz also looking strong (Steph is yet to surf at the time of writing).

The most exciting bit of news though, is that Saturday morning is looking like a day at the Box – the only Aussie slab we've ever had on the CT, a truly unique wave and a real spectacle of a venue. That's a camp out on the couch with a bunch of snacks for the day level of entertainment for your average surf fan. And with the round of 32 holding match-ups like Filipe Toledo v Jack Robbo, John John v Jack Freestone, and Jeremy Flores v Seabass, I know what I'll be doing this Saturday! (Actually, I'm gonna be inspecting apartments to lease with my girlfriend, hooray).

P.S. Unrelated, but the Toronto Raptors are in the NBA finals.

2. Let's Watch That Steph Wave One More Time

Almost a whole week ago, Steph Gilmore and Kanoa Igarashi won the Corona Bali Protected at Keramas. The highlight of the whole event was this one wave by Steph Gilmore, which was so good that Nick Carroll took it upon himself to write 800 words on it. Here's my favourite paragraph from his piece:

"It was 50 years of Australian surfing in a blink. It was Baddy Treloar kick-stalling at Angas in Morning of the Earth. It was lil bro, stopping the 7’10” Rawson dead at the centre of Pipeline’s first reef. It was Wayne Deane at Kirra, Parko behind the rock at Snapper."

3. Conner Coffin In Bali

Speaking of the Bali comp, the leading CT Surfer/YouTube Surfer-Vlogger hits us with his weekly diary entry taking us behind the scenes at Keramas. Hey, unrelated, but did you know that the Toronto Raptors are in the NBA finals?!

4. Jack Johnson was on the Occ-Cast

I went to primary school and high school with the guys who would become Australian indie rock band British India. As we went through our teens, guitarist Nic and I would often tell each other about new music we'd discovered. One day, in 2002, when I was in year 10, I excitedly told Nic about Jack Johnson. "He's like Ben Harper, but more mellow!" I said, very excited. "What... is he, like asleep?" Nic asked. Hey, even more unrelated than that terrible anecdote: the Toronto Raptors are in the NBA finals!

5. Laura Enever Hits Sri Lanka

Laura Enever continues her new feminine-celebrating travel series by heading to Sri Lanka and going surfing with Natasha Sand, one of Sri Lanka’s few female surfers. Once again, this is a wonderful and truly unique new series and props to everyone involved for putting it together.

6. Speaking of Laura Enever... This Way

Here is some kind of fashion, art, surf-skate New York clip with Jaleesa Vincent. I don't know what this is really, but I like it.

7. Sweet RVCA Aussie Road Trip Clip

Oh yes, an atmospheric synth, alt-punk, lo-fi garage rock soundtracked heavy Aussie Road Trip surf clip? Count me the frick in. Starring Noah Beschen, Shane Borland and Oscar Langburne, with cameos from Jay Davies, Ellis Ericson, Noods Webster, this is so extremely my shit that I’m going to watch it on repeat all weekend, except that I’m not, because I’m going to be looking at apartments to lease on Saturday and ugh... on the bright side, the Toronto Raptors are in the NBA finals (I know that's unrelated, but I don't care, I'm just so happy).

8. Tanner Gudauskas At Waco

Super happy fun guy Tanner Gudauskas went to the Texas wave pool, and got barrelled lying down while staring dead-eyed straight down the barrel of the camera (2 minute mark). That's a perfect ten move to make in your wave pool clip I reckon. Top stuff Tanner. (Raptors in 4!)

9. Pumping Teahupo'o

Red Bull released a clip of pumping Teahupo'o this week, featuring a Hawaiian charger I don't know much about, Tyler Newton, and a heap of local freak legend guys like Matahi Drollet. Watching pumping Teahupo'o, it really just makes you pray that we get an absolutely macking year for the Tahiti Pro this year. A proper jurrassic Teahupo'o would be perfect for Kelly Slater's probabable final year. (Also, go Toronto Raptors.)

10. Dead Kooks In Mexico

How good is the Dead Kooks team? Kassia Meador and Kelia Moniz with CJ Nelson, Leah Dawson, Victoria Vergara and Pascal Siakam!? That's as styley a longboarding team going in 2019. Here they are sliding around Mexico and having a way better time than someone with the flu in freezing cold Melbourne who may or may not have to go looking for apartments to rent on Saturday... just throwing that out there, as a hypothetical.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Hooray for Kyle Lowry.
