Ten Things From Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was June 15, 2019

1. Matt Meola's Waco, Old Town Road Parody is the clip of the Week

That funny little song featuring Billy Ray Cyrus that’s playing everywhere at the moment has already been used in a pretty good surf edit waaaay back in April by Zeke Lau and Seth Moniz, but here it gets the Weird Al Yankovic treatment from freakshow aerialist Matt Meola. And he nails it. And that’s not to mention the surfing, which is absolutely bonkers. I’m not sure I will ever get over the air he lands at 0.56 – he released his feet off the deck and touches the underside of his board with his toes?! How does he land that?! At least I thought that would be something I wouldn't be able to get over, until I saw the final air he lands at the end of the edit. What on earth is going on? Where on earth are we going with talent like this given the opportunities to hit the same sections over and over again provided by a wave pool. It’s a clip unlike one we’ve ever seen, really, and it’s hands down the best clip of the week.

2. Ross Clarke Jones Is Going To Be On Survivor

This is the best Australian Reality TV news since Occy went on Dancing With The Stars back in 2011. RCJ will be on the Aussie version of Survivor this year joined by the likes of Susie Maroney and Stephen Bradbury. The presser reads: "Known as Mad Dog, Ross has a need for speed in all things action." And mentions his noteworthy achievements such as winning the Eddie, but fails to mention "Mad Dog"'s star turning performance in Mad Wax. Missed opportunity.

3. Julian Wilson did a really big air

Like, quite big. The original title for this video on YouTube was something along the lines of, "Julian Wilson's Highest Air Ever?" But for some reason they changed that. Hey, you reckon Julian's a shot at winning Brazil? Should I put him in my Fantasy Team?

4. Tour Notes Takes Us Behind the Scenes at Margies

John John won the surfing at Margarets, but Kolohe Andino is the clear winner of the Tour Notes clip at Margarets.

5. The Coffin Brothers' West Aus Vlog

Woah, that's a strong opening. Very... strong... Office fans are going to enjoy the Andy Bernard knee percussion by (I think) Seth Moniz's mum, but my goodness that opening brought back so many memories of boring and bad nights; sitting in a room while your friends have a jam, it's a terrible time if you yourself are not playing an instrument. And while it’s kinda cool to see these guys having fun together, 2.45 seconds of blown out speakers blasting bad covers you're taking no part is is just far too long.

6. Italo Brings Back the Superman in a New Episode of Life’s Better in Boardshorts

Italo Ferreira, Tyler Warren and Eithan Osborn head somewhere tropical and have a really good time doing surfing. Italo Ferreira still looks like the kind of guy who will win a World Title and, hey, how funny is it that superman air just kinda sorta disappeared? Italo didn't get the memo!

7. Laura's Know The Feeling Series Heads To China

Another nice episode from a great new series which sees Laura Enever head to Hainan (where they host those big Longboarding World Champs) and meeing local logger Monica Guo.

8. The Mad Hueys go to Craikey’s hometown

I could watch Ry Craike get pitted on that local left he loves so much forever. Unrelated: Do you think that shoeys will be with us foever? Will people still be filming themselves doing shoeys in 2025? 2030? 2056? I really hope so! Haha, cause it's like a beer glass that your foot's been in!

9. A Portrait of Bill Finnegan

In keeping with the tone of the Mad Hueys content above, here is Pullitzer Prize winning writer William Finnegan reading from his book Barbarian Days.

10. A Sweet Logging Clip

Lola Mignot stars in this short and sharp clip aptly called Days in the Sun that just really makes you want to go surf some inconsequential waves with some good friends.
