Ten Things From Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was August 2, 2019

1. Apparently there will be a G-Land CT in 2020

Noooooo waaaaaay! This week the surfing-related group chats got a'murmuring with the bombshell news that the WSL would be returning to the "Dream Tour" era destination of Grajagan next year. The event is reported to be replacing the current Keramas comp and will also serve as the long needed quality left (that isn't Pipe or Teahupo'o) on a schedule dominated by rights.

Following last week's Internet killing Rip Curl Search clip starring Mason Ho and Mick Fanning, this is the most we've heard about G-Land in years. To be honest, I think a lot of us had forgotten it existed. And that's one of the reasons that this CT news is not being welcomed by all surfers far and wide – the spotlight is well and truly back on G-Land. The other element that might cause some friction is the infrastucture that will likely be needed to make a full on WSL CT event and broadcast run out of the relatively isolated surf spot. Mid-2020 is a long way's away, and I'm sure all that will become much clearer as time brings the event over our horizon. But sheeeesh, it's a little bit exciting to think of Medina, Owen Wright, John John and everyone else surfing heats at that incredible left.

There is the risk that we're jumping the gun and getting ahead of ourselves here though– so far the WSL has said nothing, and the reports that have been published about this (by Swellnet and Tracks) have confirmed only that the WSL has locked in dates for G-Land, and that officals from the WSL visited recently to scope out the location's viability. Is there a chance that this event would in fact be a QS and not a CT? That's certainly a possibility – but I can also confirm that my friend's brother's mate's cousin's friend's brother's friend's brother's friend's brother has said that this event is definitely going to be replacing the Keramas event, and will likely be sponsored by Quiksilver. That's an ironclad trail of sources you can take to the bank!

2. This Chinese Wave Pool Clip Went Viral

Nothing warms my internet-surf-content-loving heart like viral wave pool shit, and this right here, this hit me like a mug of hot cocoa by a crackling fire. Out of China and a waterpark in the north-east comes this footage of a wave pool malfunctioning, sending an absolute bomb of a close-out set through the crowd of bathers who hadn't signed up for anything like it. Apparently the wave was caused by damaged electronics, which ended up leaving 40 bathers injured – cracked ribs etc., heavy. But does it also not blow your mind that this wave pool, that is not designed for surfing at all, has the built in option of producing this ridiculous and heavy Waimea Shorebreak like wave? The possibilities!

3. Julian Wilson's Web Series, Ep 3 From Brazil

It's called The In Between Series, and it's very good. As far as surfer-produced individual content goes, it might even be the best. This episode follows Julian around as he surfs at Saquarema for the Oi Rio Pro. Would have been nice if there was a spot in this where Julian apologised personally to my J-Bay Fantasy Surfing team, but I'm guessing he'll save that for episode 4.

4. Everyone's New Favourite Surfer, Jaleesa Vincent

The Billabong freesurfer roadtrips through New Zealand in this new clip from Luka Raubenheimer that features her own animations. I've said it before, but I'm gonna just keep on saying it: she really feels like the true spiritual successor to Ozzie Wright.

5. Stace Galbraith's SnakeTales Style Video

Stace Galbraith is one of the career surf coaches on the Championship Tour and Qualifying Series, and he's probably also the youngest in the role too. Which means when he puts together his own version of Jake Paterson's Snake Tales YouTube series, it comes a little more stylised, and also features the man in question in front of the camera. This episode of Stace Tales follows groms Tane Bowden, Micah Margieson, Thomas Carvalho, Kai Tandler, Kurt Morrow and Zack McMahon at the Burleigh Heads Pro Junior.

6. There's a new Adriano De Souza Doco

I haven't had a chance to watch this yet, but Adriano De Souza is a freaking lord and so I'm just going to include this here and make the blind claim that it's the best sports documentary of 2019, way better than the Diego Maradona doco getting around at the moment (which is really quite good too).

7. Koa Rothman in Mexico

Jumping back into the endless content stream that is Koa Rothman's YouTube series – This Is Livin' – because he's hitting those sand-bottom righthand pointbreaks that break my heart like a Brian Wilson ballad.

8. Mason Ho and Mega Semadhi Won the GoPro portion of the Rip Curl Cup

Hooray for Mason. Hooray for Mega. Hooray for all the lovely people who had a lovely time at the wrap party of Padang Padang which looked pretty lovely.

9. Luke Hynd and Darcy Ward's Imagination Roulette Ep 2

Episode 1 of this four part series saw Luey Hynd take on cold Irish slabs, and now in Episode 2 we have the goofy-foot freesurfer slashing around some more rippable parts of Europe – like Portugal. And gee he’s really ripping. A tidy piece of web-surf-filmmaking right here.

10. Oh Yeah, the US Open Started, Forgot About That

The big ol' classic American QS down at Huntington Beach got going, and Griffin Colapinto did this in it. Do we care about the US Open any more?

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Go Luke Davies Uniacke!
