COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING

Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was June 12 2020

1. David Rastovich Freaking Rules

Has there been a freesurfer with greater longevity, greater continuous relevance than Rasta? When you think about it, he has an argument to the claim of the greatest freesurfer of all time, right? Inside This Soft World is a simple but rad five minute surf clip from a recent Wednesday morning. Nathan Oldfield, as usual, is in fine form behind the lens and on the edit. Rasta's surfing a 5'7" twinnie alone somewhere on the North Coast, and he's threading tubes and drawing lines as beautifully as he ever has. It's really something. Also, dolphins, of course.

Unfortunately, I can't embed the clip here just yet, but you can watch it over on Patagonia's Roaring Journals page.

This is normally where the video would go. Instead, this is a screengrab from the video.

2. Jaleesa Vincent Rules

Left over footage from an Indo boat trip for the Toby Cregan Rage team movie Rage 3, and sheeesh, save some style for the rest of us Jaleesa, in and out of the water. One of the coolest people in surfing right now, surely.

3. Asher Pacey Rules (and So Do Kneelos)

The smoothest surfer on the Gold Coast (probably!), Mr. Asher Pacey heads to the south coast to hook up with Kai Otton and kneeboarding World Champ Chayne Simpson (check the punt Chayne does at 4.30!). Pacey once again is a delight to watch surf. This is proving to be an elite week of stylish surf clips.

4. This Gold Coast May Video Rules

Known on Instagram as mister_clips, new YouTube channel Home School brings us a feature vid from an epic May of waves on the Gold Coast. It's kinda sorta maybe the definitive surf edit out of the area for the run of swells that defined sufing up there under COVID-19. Everyone from World Champs Mick, Joel, and Steph, to Sierra Kerr and the flying Squirrel star in it, while behind the lens it seems was a whole community of Goldy filmers (Luke Workman, Malachi Urquhart, Shagga, Lachlan McKinnon and more).  Lesson 1 May Days is a ripper of a production, really looking forward to more in this format from this crew.

5. Julian Wilson Rules

The fellow who brought us those standout Merewether clips from the day of days (goes by the YouTube name Novacastrian Waves), has pulled together an edit of Julian Wilson surfing around the Newy neighbourhood during the lockdown, with a couple of waves from the Surfest comp he won in March... which seems like a decade ago. Remember pro surfing competitions? I can almost remember them... it seems such a strange concept now.

6. Mason Ho Rules

Mason Ho gives us a point of view day in the life experience of his rock surfing ways and it's now reached a point where I'm not sure we should keep watching him do this. He's going to get hurt, guys. And the more we watch, the closer to the rocks he surfs. I'm worried! You don't have to do this, Mase. We'll still love you!

7. Dion and Taj Rule

Just before lockdown, Dion Agius jumped a couple of planes from Tasmania to West Aus and joined his new Globe teammate to do some pro surfing around Yallingup. It's a big ad for their Cult of Freedom collection, and like all the stuff Globe does, it's really well put together, and cool, without being pretentious. And what a song. I'm full fan-boying this.

8. Jared Mell and Lee Wilson Rule

After beaches in Bali had been closed for months, this one with a heaaaaving tube opened for Jared and Lee, apparently due to guards who patrol the area not being paid. Note: the animations and graphics in this clip were put together by Lee Wilson himself. Tidy work.

9. Shippies Rules

Talon Clemow, the filmmaker behind the Cloudbreak documentary, Thundercloud, is working on another feature length doc, this time about Shipsterns. This sesson is a part of that, coming from Autumn 2020, when COVID-19 forced it into a locals only froth-fest. Talon's take on the trip is unlike any I've seen before and it really gives you a sense of how a day like this feels as it plays out on the boat.

10. Wave Pools... They're Okay

What's a week of surfing on the internet without some wave pool hijinks? The Palm Springs pool gets visited by the American Snapt crew, including surfers Ian Crane, Eithan Osborne, Parker Coffin and Cheyne Magnusson. There's something very cowboy about the way this pool has been presenting itself, like a bunch of dudes have just thrown it together and are running riot with it. Chaos.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. Go North Melbourne.
