John John Launches New Brand, a Fresh Craig Anderson Clip, and the Best New Surf TV Show
COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING
Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was August 14 2020
1. New Surf TV Show, RIVALS, Looks Good?! – Episode 1
"If you thought these guys were good on the World Tour, wait till you see what they can do at home!"
Necessity is the mother of invention, and this invention in the midst of the COVID-19 travel ban is pretty bloody good. Eleven iconic Australian competitive male surfers open up old rivaliries in a fresh concept, 13 episode show over the next three months.
Those surfers are: Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Dean Morrison, Bede Durbidge, Josh Kerr, Danny Wills, Shaun Cansdell, Jay Thompson, Glen Hall, Kai Otton and Nathan Hedge have two hours at their local to surf however they want, on as many waves as they want. And it looks rad. The one criticism... where are the ladies?
Episode Number One here is an intro to the whole deal, with a full Josh Kerr ep going live tomorrow on Channel 9 at midday, and online around here after that.
2. Coco Ho and Filipe Toledo Won the Surf Ranch Comp
The WSL's "Rumble at the Ranch" went down dawn-early Monday morning our time. It was won by the combo team of Coco and Filipe taking down Tati Weston Webb, Kanoa Igarashi in the final. For a US locked comp, it's interesting they managed to have a Hawaiian, two Brazillians and a Japanese surfer representing at the pointy end. Kinda signals, once again, that California is the hub of modern WSL-era professional surfing.
Ho and Toledo pledged their winnings to Surfrider, which is great, I guess. I don't live in the US, but it does seem that the WSL, a US based event company, mighta wanted to use their first event in moooonths to highlight some more immediate causes close to home? Has anything dramatic and interesting and culturally pivotally important been going on over there? I don't know. I don't know.
3. A Fresh Craig Anderson Clip!
The silkiest surfer going around, Newy’s Craig Anderson, drops a clip for his newish wetty sponsor Zion. It’s one day of surfing wedge novelties and below sea-level tubes somewhere on the east coast of Australia. And how good does that fish Ando’s surfing from the 3.40 mark look?
4. Meet the 2040, 2044, 2048 Olympic Gold Medallist, Xander Fanning
Mick Fanning had a baby! Xander Dean Fanning was born on Monday August 10. And now Mick Fanning is a dad, which is a wonderful part of Mick's continuous and seamless evolution. From Goldy surf rat bogan grommet, to sophisticated shark-punching champion of the world/hero of the common man, to now – a terribly daggy dad.
Fanning confirmed that by posting the birth announcement from the perspective of Xander... "Hi, my name is Xander Dean Fanning and I came into the world on 10th August 2020..." etc. "I’m extremely strong, healthy and calm all because of my beautiful Mama Breeana... " Just the most dorky dad stuff imagineable, its the best! Proof that when you become a dad, you cannot be cool. The dad powers are just too strong.
5. Karina Rozunko, Logging in California
Sure, it's a blatant Vans ad. But it's a Vans ad with beautiful logging edited by Jimmy Kinnaird that makes you nostalgic for a Californian teenage summer that we never even had.
6. One Epic Wave At Desert Point
Here's Moroccan charger Othmane Choufani geting three barrels on one wave. The jerk.
7. Soli Bailey Rules
From the eye of Morgan Maassen comes a really high-end surf edit of one of Australia’s favourite young surfers on the Championship Tour, Soli Bailey. The clip captures his rookie year travelling around the world on the Championship Tour in 2019 as well as life back at home around Byron while Soli reflects on just how special the local coast is to him as both a dedicated surfer, and a proud indigenous Australian. And, of course, he’s ripping... so damn smooth!
8. Tyler Gudang's Movie is Great –Digital Surf, Digital World
We've got some real Kai Neville, Dear Suburbia vibes for the opening seconds of this Tyler Gudauskas-led new surf movie – and that is meant as a compliment – but Digital Surf, Digital World becomes a lot more wacky, a lot more fun immediately after. It’s a wild ride this one, with phone call recordings of Albe Falzon and Nathan Fletcher, jumping to Jane’s Addiction or Bright Eyes on the soundtrack, all coming over the top of a real DIY aesthetic surf movie that makes you want to go out and create something yourself. Starring Tyler as well as his brothers Patrick and Dane, Dylan Graves, Tom Lowe, Marlon Lipke and more… it taps into something special: Surfers are still, at their core, very stoked people.
9. John John Florence Started a Brand
Would this be more or less interesting if the above sentence said "Band" instead of "Brand"? The world's most marketable surfer started his own clothing brand, Florence Marine X this week. Florence made the announcement on Instagram, posting, "Our goal is to build things that motivate us to get outside and thrive in the elements while doing our best to protect the ocean and the land. I will share more details as things start to develop. Here’s to the road ahead!"
We've no clues as to what those clothes will look like, but the logo has a bit of a classic sailing/nautical looking flag shape – so read into that however you please.
10. Justine Dupont Trailer – Enfer & Paradis
French charger Justine Dupont has a new doco-movie coming out whose title translates to Hell & Heaven, and it looks great. My main takeaway though is that Portuguese lord Lucas "Chumbo" is my dream hype man. Enthusiasm and positivity in spades.
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
