P-PASS JANUARY REPORT

Photos & words by Richard Kotch

January at P-Pass is usually a great month, in fact, last month I tempted fate by writing that “January is a sure thing for waves at P-Pass”. Naturally, Huey chose to step in and show us who really makes the calls around here!

We started off happily enough with a nice mid-sized North swell of 3-4ft at 14 seconds. Whenever the period hits 14 seconds you can expect double ups and when you’re seeing double ups you’re going to get barreled. The nice thing about this first run of swell was the very user-friendly direction, combined with the small tidal change meaning that that you could literally surf all day.

There was no sitting on the boat waiting for the tide to come up to cover the reef. The only negative was that the clouds seemed to be sitting right on top of us meaning that the light was awful for shooting, and the rain was so relentless it was actually rather cold! But I’m sure I was the only person who noticed or cared! The PSC guests enjoyed a fun week of waves before it all went rather quiet.

The next two weeks had the occasional ‘moment’ but my “sure thing” call was looking pretty suss! Typically the guests would go out for a paddle and try to make the most of what was on offer for the morning, then go off hiking or fishing for the rest of the day. Evenings were spent enjoying sunset drinks and eating fresh sushi at the Mangrove Bay bar. Surf aside it was all quite idyllic and the weather was beautiful!

I think it was probably Confucius who once stated that ‘after every flat spell there will soon come a good swell’ maybe it wasn’t him but whoever it was they were spot on. The last ten days of January saw two back to back NW swells and another straight North pulse which more than made up for the down days through the middle of the month.
