What the Mentawai Islands and Banyaks Were Like This August

The month of August, as well as the previous June and July, has been non-stop swells. The machine just won’t turn off!

From the beginning to the end of August we had plenty of swell but a tricky south wind to deal with, which makes it difficult logistically to manoeuvre from wave to wave and make for a better surfing experience.

Luckily, Moon Palikir has a very experienced and knowledgeable surf guide who makes all the difference to our guests. Incredible waves were shared by all and we even managed to sneak a few memorable sessions in at waves we thought we had no chance of surfing with the southerly winds. Sometimes mother nature gives you a small window, but it's up to the guides to understand local weather patterns to make the most of those windows.

As a bonus this month, we also bring a report from further North in the Sumatran wave magnet. We have Star Koat 2, stationed in the Banyaks most of the 2019 season. August didn’t disappoint! Treasure Island and Lolok Point were quality and often the go-to waves for the consistent swells Huey threw our way.

Check out the video from our August trips and hope you enjoy the moments we have selected.

September begins with the arrival of a new swell and another approaching in a few days already within range of our radar.

2020 is already looking pretty full on the Star Koat 2

Moon Palikir has some availability, but its going quickly. Make sure you contact World Surfaris to secure your space.
