Big Bali Swell for the Bukit

The huge swells that have been battering Australia’s West and South Coast also marched in along the Indonesian archipelago. Crew were calling it the biggest swell in quite a while, with expat Aussie surf photographer Jason Childs claiming the best Padang since '98.

The photos here are from the first three days of the swell. Saturday saw a jump in size, especially in the afternoon, in line with Ben McCartney’s Thursday forecast. Sunday was similar size with a small decline in the afternoon.

Saturday arvo and Sunday morning at Uluwatu were pristine. Crowds gathered on the cliffs to witness the gladiators taking on 12 foot plus lines of energy that originated way down around the southern tip of South Africa.

Monday morning saw a change in direction of swell with a little more south in it, but a jump in period saw an increase in wave size. The lines were a lot more powerful and the outside reefs really began to crank by lunchtime.

I swam out to Padang around 3pm on Monday afternoon to capture the place in all its glory. With a dropping tide and ever increasing swell by late arvo the sets were closing out and washing through the lineup.

One poor bugga came swimming through the lineup after losing his board at Uluwatu a few kilometres up the headland. He had no choice but to swim down the Bukit peninsular to try and find someway in. If it weren't for Jason Childs on his ski the bloke would have had to swim another 3-4 kilometres down through Impossibles and hope to get in between the 10-12 foot closeouts and hell current at Dreamland, or keep going to Belangan or Jimbaran Bay, another 10 kilometres into the bay…

Heaps of Aussies have been getting into the swell. Yesterday's Padang session had Mitch Coleborn, professional snowboarder Clint Allen, a couple of older fellas and ever-lasting performer, Sasha Stocker, getting amongst it.

The swell peaked Monday night and this morning saw a drop in size but still quite solid.
