The main talking point this month was the ASC/MBBA sanctioned Maldives Open returning to Hudhuranfushi for the second year in a row on the 13th-16th September. This is a really fun event to be around and the Maldivian surfers really make the most of the opportunity to come to Hudhuranfushi, enjoy resort life and meet and compete with some of Asia’s best surfers.

The event only had a four day window to run in so the organizers were anxiously checking the charts as the start date drew closer, especially as Lohis was looking somewhat less than inspiring with small, lackluster swell and strong cross-shore winds. In fact the judges tower was erected on one of the worst days of the season so far, prompting an elderly English holidaymaker watching all the fanfare, to enquire as to “how there could be a surfing competition if there isn’t any combers for them there surfers to ride?” He need not have worried as a few days later the event opening ceremony was held in front of perfect barreling Lohis under a magical Maldivian sky!

Needless to say the competition was a great success and even if the best moments of the swell were somehow missed and for some reason the finals were held in absolutely terrible conditions…but we won’t go into that!

We did enjoy a rather busy session down at Sultans the day after the event and if there had been twice as many waves or half the crew it would have been epic, instead it was competitive to say the least, but it was a beautiful day and aside from an American lady trying to decapitate Dedi with her 9’ Longboard everyone had a great time! We got back to the island in time for the closing ceremony and after party and everyone agreed the event and the destination had far exceeded expectations.

The event rolled out of town as quickly as it rolled in and the next day it was back to business as usual, though the after party hangovers and post contest ‘tumbleweed’ vibe needed multiple espresso’s to shake off!

A couple days later on the 18th September Hudhuranfushi won the 2015 Maldives Matato (Maldives Travel Awards) leading surf resort award. The quality and consistency of Lohis and the very popular new Lohis rooms (literally 15 steps to check the surf) combined with the great value all-inclusive packages to swing the vote in our favor! I have said it many times but as surf trips go, especially relaxing surf trips with your wife, girlfriend or family, Hudhuranfushi is really hard to beat! The swell seemed to agree and rather than fade away the contest swell actually gave us another pulse out of the S/SE and the inside section at Sultans really came alive with some long tube sections. Hudhuranfushi Surf guide Hoobs locked into a long one from the take off to the channel that was timed at 9 seconds behind the curtain.

After three days of good rights the swell dropped and the wind picked up but Lohis still had moments, in fact, to me this is when Lohis really shines – when the other waves in the area are small and crowded, Lohis can still be a good size and really rippable with a mellow vibe in the water, so it’s a great wave to be staying in front of!

The poor conditions didn’t last long and by the evening of the 26th there were some great little double ups running down the point. I really love the sight of double ups as a new swell kicks in – you just know it’s going to be a good one! The low tide session the following morning saw some really nice barrels and perfect conditions all the way through until lunch when the current kicked in, but by then all anyone wanted to do was kick back and enjoy a nice siesta before beer o’clock on the Lohis deck!

You’ve gotta love #LifeatLohis!
