Mentawai Swell Report: September 30 - Oct 12, 2015

Fresh south winds continued to frustrate throughout the Mentawai Island chain through Late September and early October. A fresh swell alert had everyone pumped, but where to go?

Playgrounds offered some protection from the wind on the first two days of swell. There were some fun, clean waves on offer and limited crew around, minimal boat charter activity and good crew in the resorts ensuring fun days surfing at Pitstops and surrounding areas.

The Kaimana surf charter was on location with Belgium-born, Bali local “Arpad Leclere” who hunted during the peak of the swell and scored some solid tubes. Whilst it wasn’t a major swell it was definitely big enough to bring quite a few set ups to life.

Unfortunately when the swell peaked, the smoke haze seemed to move up another level or two making filming difficult. Hideaways was the go to location with Perfect 4-6ft barrel rides for 3 consecutive days. The wind puffed offshore and there was a tight, epic crew on hand.

The early October swell was backed up by another pulse on the 10’th of October. The persistent south winds were still an issue and the smoke continued to filter through every session. The last few days showed there is still much potential for surf during the next month or so in The Mentawai. All the regular breaks throughout the islands came back into play on most days. The Kaimana scored some epic waves at Lances and Macaronis before heading home well satisfied after another great trip.
