March report & photos provided by Richard Kotch for World Surfaris

Travelling to the North Male region of the Maldives for a surf trip in March is always a bit of a gamble – March 28th is generally considered to be the end of the NE Monsoon, so it goes without saying that throughout the month there’s a good chance that the NE wind (that blows between Dec and late March) will still be blowing down the point at Lohis.

Typically, conditions are either poor/average with strong cross/on-shores from the NE, or, it’s perfect beyond words with dream-like conditions! It all depends on when the NE flow ends. However, the one thing you can bet on with confidence is zero crowds. This season the first ten days of the month were small and windy, then the wind stopped, the swell picked up and suddenly the gamble was paying off big time!

We have just enjoyed a week of 3-4ft playful Lohis with between 2-5 guys out every day! It doesn’t get much better! Over the course of a season here we are regularly told that “this has been the best trip of my life” so to hear it from guests this early in March certainly bodes well for the rest of the season, in fact, the last time March was this good at Lohis we ended up having the most perfect year ever; food for thought!

PS. The forecast for next week is looking amazing!

See you soon. Rich.
