Kirra cranks as Cyclone Vania turns on the juice

The messages began early this morning. It was on. The media scrum vying for vantage points along the side of the Gold Coast highway were calling it the best Kirra in 20 years.

Mick Fanning got a 200-metre barrel from Big Groyne to Pizza Hut - a wave that the Snapper Rocks local and former World Champion was reportedly pretty happy about. Which kinda puts it in perspective. And he wasn't the only one feeling the stoke, as wave-starved punters and pros feasted on the kind of waves not seen in quite a few years at Kirra.

While the swell may have peaked in Queensland today, the next few days look like there should be plenty of waves around. Get amongst it if you can!
