The annual and prestigous O'Neill Wave of the Winter award was handed out overnight, with Jamie O'Brien taking the honours and banking the $25,000 prize.

Awarded to the best wave ridden on the North Shore of Oahu over the winter season each year, O'Brien's late drop to technical grab-rail pigdog on a first reef bomb, from all the way back in November, was picked as number 1 by the judges (Gerry Lopez, Pancho Sullivan, Shawn Briley and Shane Dorian)In the ten year history of the award, Jamie is the first to have won it for the second time.

And with the decade wrapping up this year, while simultaneously being the tenth year of Surfline's respected award, there was also the opportunity to award the 4ocean Wave of the Decade, selected from all the previous winners of the WOTW. Kauai’s Reef McIntosh took home $10,000 for his crazy Off-the-Wall mutant from December 2 2011.

Also included amongst the awards were the O’Neill Women’s Overall Performance Award (which is given to the female surfer who consistently demonstrates courage, skill and style while riding the most challenging waves on the North Shore) and the Surfline Breakthrough Performer Award (a youth-focused division celebrating the accomplishments of one surfer, 19 years old or younger). This year North Shore local Moana Jones was unanimously awarded the O'Neill Women's Overall Performance Award, while 19-year-old Brazilian pro Joao Chianca – with five solid WOTW entries – took the Breakthrough Performer Award. Hell times!
