Ry Craike has been a busy man lately. Winter’s usually the time of year for the desert reefs near his home in North West Western Australia, but the unseasonal run of north-west cyclone swells over the past few months and the birth of his daughter Lyla indigo Craike has kept him on his toes. Despite this, he managed to pack up the 4WD and sneak off down south to film The Rare to Raw Rugged Roadie for his recently revamped website. We caught up with Ry nursing his daughter though the long drive back up to Kalbarri to find out what’s been going on…

THE RARE TO RAW RUGGER ROADIE....... from Tom Jennings on Vimeo.

“It’s been a pretty weird summer with heaps of cyclones. We were lucky to get that one that pushed swell right down to Margaret River and managed to get some waves off it. Pretty much every man and his dog was out there. Jay Davies and Taj were standouts, but there were about 30 guys out. “

“There were some six and even the odd eight footers. It was pretty perfect, but pretty tricky on your back-hand… I managed to get one or two. They were real fastr and racey - real neck breakers [laughs]”

For there it was back in the car for a roadtrip to the “unknown”. And, as you can see from the video, it was well worth the drive.

“The last day we were there we scored,” recalls Ry. “It was good way to end the trip, before the 20 hour trip back…”

Out of the water, Ry’s been busy working on his website, www.rycraike.com. Working with his filmer, Tom Jennings, he plans to put together more mini-movies like this one “to show the adventure side of surfing as much as the surfing itself”. Stay tuned...

Check out what else Ry's been up to on his re-vamped website www.rycraike.com...
